Yes Alan Joyce is showing a little arrogance in that article.

The Australian said:
Jetstar's brand strength, reputation and first-mover advantage means it is well-placed to fend off challenges, he says.
Brand Strength? Reputation? I think he is getting Jetstar and Qantas confused....

It's amazing how JQ throw around the "Qantas Group" line whenever they might be in trouble and can manipulate people. This is no different to the Jetstar ads in Japan clearly stating that Jetstar is a Qantas airline. Don't expect QF service though, and as the Jetstar CSM said to a fellow pax when checking in last year, "if you don't like it, go and fly with them!" (being Qantas)

Smug and arrogant.

Jetstar vows to fend off Lion Air | The Australian

"He said Jetstar took every competitor seriously but that the Qantas Group had competed against Indonesian carriers before. "Even though (Lion Air Australia) may have an Australian air operators certificate, I think in people's minds they'll be perceived as in Indonesian carrier," he said.

What is he saying here?

Mal said:
"That will mean, particularly on international services, people will have choice between a Qantas group airline or an Indonesian carrier. And when(ever) that has happened in the past we've obviously done pretty well in market share. We think that will be the case here too." "

I have to admit to a Perth view of this, but I don't recall that Qantas have ever really competed against the Indonesian airlines, having only a couple of flights a week versus a much more frequent Garuda service (or Sempati or Merpati in the past)

Once again, the "Qantas Group Airline" line has been trotted out by Jetstar, even though they only marginally care about passengers compared to other airlines in the Qantas Group.

Suits them to do so sometimes, and distance themselves other times.

Hmmm... good question! I reckon he is trying to say without saying i.e. implying that Australians will fly a trusted i.e. safe Australian airline backed by the safest airline in the world compared to a 'dodgy' Indonesian airline - associated with a country that has dodgy airlines that fall out of the sky and kill Australians (Garuda)....? Long bow?

[Garuda is one of the airlines blacklisted by our company risk people (and we are in pretty much every country in the world)]

LOL, True! But, I think oz_mark, was being a even more sophisticated in his post. ;-)

Arrogance aside, as oz_mark points out, Australia’s major population base (east side of course) hasn’t had the experience Perth has had with Indonesia carriers. (It is important to note, prior to Compass, many regular folk from WA were more likely to have been to Indonesia, than visited the East Coast of their own country!)

Indonesian carriers will become an increasing “threat” to Australian airline businesses, particularly as we move to pan-S.E.Asian deregulation. I predict; the uptake in Perth will be high and phenomenal, compared to the East Coast’s initial response! (Maybe part of the reason why Qantas is moving to an all “wide-body aircraft” service on Perth; Coast 2 Coast routes, AND starting a Perth base for Jetstar short haul international Point 2 Point services, as apposed to the (all new hub strategy) viaDRW, that it will create in the north. PLUS Virgin Blue has aligned with Skywest, this might enable it to drop its own trans-continental services, if required in the future.)

Perceptions involving safety will be at the forefront of S.E.Australians’ minds, whereas in the West, price/opportunity will over-ride safety concerns (due to enormous pre-existing “brand Indonesia” exposure).

An Indonesian strategy for conquering Australia must involve WA, and the NT first! (Tiger has worked a similar tactic, then moved on to position itself as Melbourne-centric, in a Sydney-centric airline world, very sophisticated. Plus it shows an understanding of the complexities involved with marketing to S.E.Queenslanders!)

I don't disagree with your safety concerns though pauly7.

P.S. the next stoopid Qantas Group employee that says “but, they are a different airlines” gets bopped on the head with – “IF y'all working for different airlines, then Jetstar would be flying Tullamarine – Kingsford Smith, with frequency, @ $79 lead-in, $49 regular promotional, but it’s not, so you aren’t!”

Per Boeings web-site:

SINGAPORE, Feb. 19, 2008 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and Jakarta-based Lion Air today announced an order for 56 Next-Generation 737-900ER (Extended Range) airplanes. This order, valued at more than $4.4 billion at current list prices, brings Lion Air's combined orders for the 737-900ER to 178. Additionally, the airline acquired purchase rights for an additional 50 737-900ERs.

With 178 planes plus 50 purchase rights they must be planning on going to lots of places!!

I am continually amazed by how many people (particularly PER based) don't even realise that J* is owned by QF.

Lion will be huge in PER for sure.
