Laptop stolen [after being left behind] at BNE Int [security screening].

I had someone pick up my bag from the belt after scanning. I don’t know their intentions but I didn’t wait to find out and took it off them. All this pfaff kind of screws up the explosive checks a little hey? And a boo to those who walk through after you do in scanning and then stand right in front of the area to grab bags.

I think theft is pretty easy in this area especially for a bag just left

A fellow picked up my bag after screening at SYD international.Though his bag was the same as mine.

Agree that the Lost Property office at the airport should be the first port of call. “Stolen” is a bit premature, I think.

The OP mentioned that the cc had been charged for pay TV subscriptions which would indicate someone else has it unlawfully.

The credit card charge is not necessarily connected to the iPad issue, is it?

Perhaps, but who knows?

I wonder how many people save their cc details in their banking apps. I hope there would’ve been a laptop password at least. Perhaps we could have a vote, not that I know how to set one up here.

I can't understand why someone would have their credit card details on their laptop

Could someone please clarify where exactly the OP mentioned their CC was charged?

All I deduced was they got some subscription "emails", and they changed their internet banking "details". Not sure if the two are connected at all!

I think it is the use of the word “since”, as in this : “internet enough to get some emails saying she’s since being signed up for various pay TV subscriptions.” In the first post.

Could someone please clarify where exactly the OP mentioned their CC was charged?

Maybe the OP can chime in for some further clarification?

Not necessarily leave credit card details on a laptop but payments on that laptop could leave traces of credit card details in cookies or other temporary files. People that know what they are doing would find it easy to find that information.

Then there is browsing history.

Just had a look in my (ANZ) banking app and it does not display the full credit card number or expiry date. If someone stole my phone they would need to a) know my security pin on my phone and b) my banking pin to get into my account.

I don't know the level of security the OP's friend had on their ipad however if it wasn't pin protected potential thieves would still need to know internet banking passwords to access the bank account. It's possible the owner of the laptop had saved the password to the device hence their banking details being accessible by anybody who got their hands on the ipad. Another way theives may have accessed credit card details would be if someone had a PayPal account and saved the password to the device.

What has happened to the OP after the single initial post?...

Are we being left hanging with limited, superficial and puzzling details? - dare I say again...?

A request was made and many, what I perceived as helpful, comments were made. I see no indication of aggressive scepticism in the responses, so the OP should not be scared away.

Even if the OP was having trouble contacting her mate, a quick update for all those who have made the effort to respond would seem to be polite. So all the more puzzling...

Unfortunately this sometimes happens - and I am sure many would have felt this was yet another, even though we were trying to give the OP the benefit of doubt.

But at the same time, it is very understandable. People are just people. My take on this scenario is the following: (posted for members discussion - no real use to the OP) The OP had dabbled in AFF before the post - his joining date suggests this. His "mate" then suffers the problem - laptop left behind in security. OP then tries to help mate, reaching out to an unfamiliar yet potentially good source of help - AFF. Within hours, discovers via friend that said laptop is simply wallowing in the Lost and Found. Problem solved, no need to seek more help, no investment or intentions for future engagement that would provoke the desire to waste 5 minutes reading or thanking the posters who tried to help....

This is normal :)

There can be significant delays between a passenger lodging their items for x-ray and eventually collecting them on the other side.

In MEL last week there were two x-ray machines working, but only one body scanner. There were around 10 people in line. One passenger went through the body scanner with a bum-bag. They had to be rescreened. Their companion had the same. The x-ray machines were still processing bags and spitting them out (with the new x-ray machines some bags get sent for additional screening, some are available for immediate collection, so there can be up to 15-20 bags on each each x-ray).

With the additional screening for the two pax with bum bags there was now a queue of 20 or so for the body scanner, and 20 or so bags on the other end for collection.

Theft of an item was a real possibility.

I never, ever let my bag/belongings go ahead or fall behind me in the security lines.

I’ve had security guards tell me to walk through when the X-ray machine has stopped and my tray is stationary on the non-screened side. I politely decline and let other people walk through until my bag goes into the machine.

Equally in the US I’ve been in queues and the belt is moving faster than the human queue (rarely happens in AU) . I’ve taken my tray off the belt and held it in my hands until I get to the front. A lady behind me once asked me why and I explained I didn’t feel like being robbed today and she quickly snatched her tray off the belt too :)

I agree. But at MEL we were going through pax and bags pretty much in sync, but passenger with bum bag got turned around and sent through again. Nothing that could be done to stop my bags going through at that stage.

And then second passenger also with bum bag (and it was body scan, item shown, pat down, identification of bum bag, then passenger and bag has to be brought back through, rinse and repeat for passenger two)
