From News.com.au:

A JETBLUE flight attendant who got into a heated argument with a passenger after landing at New York's John F Kennedy Airport hurled obscenities at passengers over the plane's public address system, then activated the plane's emergency chute and slid down it in a dramatic escape.

What a fail! Especially in the current employment environment in the US.

Hows that? He has been named in the headlines which is odd, but it means he has at least 5 years on the speaking circuit at anger management courses across the world, one could say its a good career move, not that I am saying that .

Sounds like JetBlue FA’s may be under more stress than people realise, if this can happen so easily.

Also, if other pax were getting their bags, so they’d arrived at the gate, why was the door still armed, surely it should have been disarmed shortly before they got there. Though I guess he could have just re-armed it to make his escape.

I hope he gets a good lawyer and has a decent union behind him.

IMO stress is a pathetic excuse for this kind of behaviour. Or rather, for his actions he will need to be punished and I don't see stress as a strong (if even credible) mitigating circumstance. If stress had any cause and the culpability of who caused that critical level of stress needs to be established then that is a separate case.

Even if it were a backlash against a pax who actively disobeyed crew instructions, that could've been easily referred and handled to police or other ground security. In LOTFAP, that's not awfully hard. The pax who got up early before the seatbelt sign was switched off is also an idiot, mind you.

The union will probably defend him from being dismissed, just like it did with that orange juice FA from AA.

Re: JetBlue flight attendant Steve Slater swears at passengers, then exits plane Rea

It sounds to me that he was thinking of quitting and decided to go out with a bang.

it's a great story! havent you dreamed up fantastic ways of resigning too?

Gee we are all full of compassion here lately.Read the story. The guy's father died of Motor Neurone disease 2 years ago,his mother is dying of cancer and the only book noted on his Facebook page is about AA(and I dont mean the airline). Then some idiot pax disobeys him, injures him and swears at him.
I feel for him-he needs help and counselling. All he has done is show hes human.

That’s the idea I got too, seeing as he grabbed 2 beers, hopefully he didn’t get a chance to drink them on the way.

I am at least a little surprised at how easy it was for him to get to his car though. I can’t imagine when you slide down a slide onto the tarmac the employee parking lot is right next door, or even easily accessible from there. I’d have thought JFK would have much better security.

Re: JetBlue flight attendant Steve Slater swears at passengers, then exits plane Rea

Good on him! He has just done what every flight attendant has probably thought of at some time - telling a passenger to bugger off and pop a slide - and he did them both at the same time!!

It's probably the number one thing a crew member says they would like to do on their last flight - pop a door!

Re: JetBlue flight attendant Steve Slater swears at passengers, then exits plane Rea

You know what, from time to time people just snap (witnessed that first hand myself yesterday, and not my fault either - more on that later).

When they do, it's due to a culmination of issues which manifest themselves in one, massive outburst or action - and generally a result because they've not been able to find an appropriate pressure release valve or outlet so they can de-stress & unload their baggage (no pun intended).

Thankfully the FA's actions didn't injure anyone, and I have to feel for a guy just lost it after after so many years of reported service and has no doubt tolerated more rude and inconsiderate pax then he'd like to remember that didn't give two hoots about him. On the plus side, he did go out on a real high.

I hope he doesn't lose his job, because it sounds like that it's his career of choice. Let's hope Jetblue see sense and compassion, and offer him appropriate intensive counselling and support services so he can get back on board sometime soon.

I'm on the side of the FA also...

PAX can be so rude...

Re: JetBlue flight attendant Steve Slater swears at passengers, then exits plane

As someone who has suffered from a mental condition before, how am I supposed to view this?

Putting myself in the shoes of this FA, my response (based on the type of mental condition I suffered) might have been to open the door and leap out, committing suicide.

At what point do we acknowledge that there are real people with real stresses that have real impacts on their actions, albeit possibly criminal?

We've seen plenty of cases where people use psychological factors as mitigating circumstances but for malice rather than true cause. People have been hurt or killed by the actions of such people. In this case, luckily no one got hurt.

This is probably the reason why I was critical with my first response. In addition, the more sympathetic responses here assume that there was not one shred of rationalism left in this FA's mind until he was arrested.

On the other hand - to all of you who naively believe the customer is always right - here's a perfect counterexample.

If this guy got his two beers confiscated, then I would gladly buy him a few frothies.

That pretty much sums it up for me also :!:

Must admit my sympathies are with the flight attendant. ;)

The afternoon news featured a story of this guy being seen as a hero. There is a song, t-shirts and a following.

There’s a song, t-shirts and a following for that guy that committed fraud and flew around the world too, forget his name, so that hardly means anything :p

The problem with the irate pax appears to have started before take off. The Belfast tele is top of the steve slater google ratings with this

Flight attendant in court over row - Offbeat, Breaking News - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Slater's attorney Howard Turman said his client had been drawn into a fight between two female passengers over space in the overhead lockers as the Pittsburgh to New York flight was awaiting take-off. Somehow, Slater was hit in the head.

After JetBlue Flight 1052 landed in New York, one of the women who had been asked to gate-check her bag was enraged that it wasn't immediately available, Turman said.

"The woman was outraged and cursed him out a great deal," Turman said. "At some point, I think he just wanted to avoid conflict with her.

"That's when he deployed the slide," Turman said.
