Was just playing around with some fares to Honiara and discovered that the J fare is just over 3x the Flexi (full Y fare) - how can this be justified? I know about the free market - but this seems a little excessive.

thats not unusual, it maybe flexi but not full Y which is what you are possibly referring to.

the free market is very simple, if it doesnt represent good value for a travellers circimstances, then it wont fly.

nothing fairer than that.

Ouch. Speaking of, I'm about to take my first flight with Solomans Airways next weekend ...in Y! Would have preferred VA but my client booked it.

Can you do a points upgrade on short haul int?

EDIT: Yes you can. Seems a good candidate for a J upgrade @ 9900 points (15c/point).

I don't get it... 3x Y is pretty cheap for International J class.

Good luck getting a QF/VA/SQ/EY/EK J seat for 3x their Y price.

But it isn't an international J class. It is the Virgin domestic J class product on a short-haul international route, more akin to a PE product (though without IFE).

Subjective... there are some pretty poor J seats going Intra-Europe and Intra-Asia that charge outrageous amounts though.

Yield Management confuses me.

QF SYD-HNL is a good example of a poor product with an expensive price tag.

I was just comparing it to the airlines you mentioned - QF/VA/SQ/EY/EK

Yes but those airlines don't just offer long-haul J, they all have short-haul international J at similar prices to VA with a relatively poor J experience.

I can only compare to Trans-tasman J class, on EK and QF. Both of which leave VA for dead. However I'm sure Virgin know what they're doing - I presume no or littlle competition on the route, so can charge what they like.

Yes, amazing that people pay for QF when they can fly JQ "Business" (PE) for $1600 each way - not bad for a 10 hour flight and a lot cheaper than going to Honiara on DJ in J...
