Sounds crazy but you can try it, the only thing I can imagine is how many merchants will actually do that plus you have to take the risk which is will the merchant charge another fee for the refund.

Well thats true but you got to see their terms and condition .. they won't argue...

You don't be any chance reckon that by posting ideas to "play the system" on a public forum that the banks will notice, and close your account with them, or charge you with an offence?

Does this thread break the rules too?

Nope - they don't argue, and most of the serious retailers don't even bother to ask why you are returning it. All they care about is that the item is in acceptable condition, you have the receipt, and you have the original credit card that was used for purchase. This will spoil your attempts to get points for nothing

If all of these things aren't true then you may get a refund, but I think it more likely that they will offer you a credit/voucher. In this case you have also achieved precisely nothing.

I spend my efforts ensuring that I get as many points as possible without paying a cent more than I normally would, or materially changing my spending habits. The only betrayal of that ethic so far is to pay the fee for the direct sweep option that Qantas forced down our throats.

Scams are not my game.

What you're talking about doing is not only unethical, it's also a waste of the merchants resources.

Having said that, you're smoking something if you think that what your friend got away with once is something most merchants will fall for.

99.99% of merchants are too smart to get caught falling for that SCAM (and yes, IMO it is a scam).

Why on earth would the merchant first wear the merchant fees (which arent refunded to them if they do a refund by any means other than credit) of between 1-5%, as well as opening themselves up to the risk of fraud and a charge-back once you've got your cheque refund.

Stop wasting peoples time and find an ethical way to build your points balance...here's a novel idea, fly somewhere!

... and posting on a public forum such as this is not appropriate.

Good on you! What a "terrific" idea! Tomorrow I must tell my Hotel, beware any refund requistions like this. Thanks for your posting and makes merchants become smarter than ever.

This topic is not new, I am sure many people have thought of this.

First I will talk about the most convenient method of getting (not really cheating) points, however this method has been close off by the merchant(s), and it carries high risk... however in the future there might be some new merchants which allow this "strategy" to happen...

1. Some credit cards allows you to Bpay, with the transactions treated as PURCHASE or CASH ADVANCE depends on the merchant, it is listed on the Bpay website.

2. what people do is to invest in a cash fund via the fund manager with low MER and no contribution fees (remembers cash fund never goes negative), and pay for the contributions via Bpay, that merchant was accepting Bpay from credit card as purchases.... so they can repeat the process (invest in cash fund via credit card Bpay, then withdrawal from cash fund as cheque or EFT)..and collect lots and lots of points...

3. Here comes the risk, .. then the merchant discovers this trick, so they change and now Bpay from credit cards are treated as cash advance, because the Bpay website does not update frequently, that person's $10k Bpay transaction was treated as cash advance.... and comes the cash advance fees and high interest.....

I dont know the rules Serfty but is is clearly an invitation to defraud?? points have a monetary value.

Ethics always stand above the law.

Spruce:rolleyes:

serfty is correct to keep this thread open (at this time). It doesn't add much value to our community, and I'm moving it to the Playground - where it belongs!

I must live in another dimension to some.
Once you start thinking like that you need to take a long step back and have a damn good look at the way your life is going.
Your priorities in life need some serious attention and probably you need to re-evaluate what is good and bad.
So instead of trying to play the system go play a sport, cards or w.y.
