Hey Aff fellows,

after trawling the JASA thread and having 350 status creds on Qantas- needing another 350 till gold, i thought i would try my hand at doing a "status run"?

by the end of last year i was 80 sc short of gold, and i am currently in the double status credit promo period so i figure nows the time to tip me over the edge.

i presume its about finding the lowest points loss to highest SC gained- to that end i was looking at flying MEL-SYD-PER, and then back again PER SYD MEL ( after spending a week with my dad, which is why i picked perth.)

that seems to come out at 120sc each way in business? so thats 240 for the whole run plus double status equals 480sc. which is well over what i need.

its going to cost 72000 plus $644.33 which seems a lot.

i guess my questions are threefold:

is that a normal amount of points spend for that flight, or is that because i've left it too late;

can i get better SC gained for lower points spend ex melbourne if i did a run purely for status (this one kind of combines family visit, so its not purely for SC)

a third question that i haven't figured out yet. (maybe something to do with whether i should fly direct MEL PER for 80 SC each way[total 320] for 72 000 and $272.57)

this stuff is really quite addictive! i was really surprised that the multi city flight works out to be the same point spend, but extra dosh as the direct flight, for more SC....

thanks in advance to any advice you can give me :)

Re: is Mel-PER a good status run? plus seeking points spend advice :)

I'm curious to see what the experts come back with. I'm pondering a similar run myself: SYD-MEL-PER (ret). Same points / SCs but "only" $343. My double SCs offer was extended from 30 Jun to 31 Jul and I will need exactly 480 SCs to retain WP...

You have a legitimate reason to travel, so that must count for something. Rather the heading off to TSV or the like for the hell of it.

Ex Per, go Per-Mel-Syd instead as the cheap JASA comes up to about 50k points all inclusive, if you go Per-Syd-Mel it comes up to 70k points inclusive. So if you take the 36k minimum points the cash component is lower. I experienced this when booking my trip back for the AFF meet in 2 weeks. Perhaps you should come along?

You had better click on Any Seat as Classic travel won't get you SCs.
It will cost you about 45k less kick backs and a bit more if you go via SYD.
Direct you get 80 each way in J so if you are on double SCs you will get 320 SCs and no charges.

Re: is Mel-PER a good status run? plus seeking points spend advice :)

I just did a JASA SYD-MEL-PER-MEL to get up to Gold (expecting to get up to Platinum with some further flights coming up). It netted me 200SC + 200 bonus SC (still yet to come thru). I paid 72000 pts + $300.

The flight was initially booked SYD-MEL-PER-MEL-SYD (240SC = 480 DSC), but had to cut the last MEL-SYD leg at the last minute for work reasons. Agreed the flights are cheaper ex. Perth but you lose 80sc.

Re: is Mel-PER a good status run? plus seeking points spend advice :)

I've booked a JASA - SYD/MEL/PER/ADL/SYD which will give 260SC's with the double SC promo thats 520. The ADL stop in between adds the extra. Worked out as 72k points plus $350. not too bad i figure and can do it all in one day and will get me up to platinum.

If your Melbourne based a trip to HBA then starting a JASA will add SCs for no cost apart from positioning flights, a 260 SC return is easily achieved with various options via SYD/ADL
