iPhone / iPod Touch applications?

Battery life:
I don't know if this has been mentioned before but I find the life of the Iphone battery lasts less than two days (especially using the internet/apps etc). I am with Optus and found if I turn off 3G, by going to settings/general/network/enable 3G, the power seems to last longer. Naturally, 3G is a lot faster when accessing emails etc, so when I need to I simply turn the 3G back on again when needed.

When the 3G was introduced it was mentioned that turning it off would help improve battery life, and it’s sort of obvious, but I find if I’m on EDGE it takes twice as long if not longer anyway, so 3G is the way to go.

Battery life isn’t great, even on the 3GS, but if you want an iPhone and all the apps that you love, and need to stay up and running, bring the mini-charger with you or a battery booster, I’ve done this several times and only run out of power a couple times.

The iPhone 4 seems to have a bigger battery too.

That is what they have promised and I hope they deliver on the promise.

I have the previous tech specs and new tech specs and the differences seem to be an extra 2 hours of call time on 3G and 2G networks, an extra 1 hour of battery life when surfing the web on 3G or Wifi and an extra 10 hours of audio playback. Standby time remains the same.

Jobs did trump it up at the Keynote though, so perhaps it is better.

Thanks Sam.

Not a huge improvement IMHO but anything has got to be better. ;)

*stokes the embers under the thread to get it going again...*

Question - will my 3GS work with a blackberry server?

No - iPhone has never worked with a BES. That being said, it doesn't need it -- the iPhone is able to use the ActiveSync protocol to talk directly to an Exchange server. Works quite well, actually. Not sure what version of Exchange ActiveSync is supported ... generally speaking though, try setting up an Exchange account on your iPhone using the Outlook Web Access address.

Apps I've been using...
  • 13CABS ... Melbourne cabs only, but it's bloody brilliant. Saves me waiting in a phone queue to order a cab.
  • iBooks ... Not much available, but it's nice to be able to grab copies of some of the classics and read them on the tram.
  • VIP Access ... More a work thing for me, but I love not having to carry another dongle around.
  • Aust Freq Fly ... Replying to posts is still a bit fiddly, but it's a great way of keeping up with what's going on during the day.
  • Angry Birds ... crazy addictive!

I have a company issued BB, so no use for an iphone.

The apps I use on my ipod touch include;
Weather & clock - I have loaded both with all the cities I visit (about 20 of them),
Currency - a free app which you can load and convert any currency,
Convert units - great for distance & weight conversions,
And of course the usual entertainment type apps; Skype, FB, Solitare, Pac-Man, Paper Toss, Falling Balls, etc....:D

I dont have a company issued BB and I want to keep it that way

@ Zac - I have a MS exchange acc and a POP3 acc running on my iPhone now, but the probability of the MS exchange acc being active in 2 weeks time is zero, Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin! ;)

Looking at options...

A Major problem with tripit is that it does not handle my nested or end-on-end reservations very well.

I have tripit, but I dont get emailed an itinerary - I just get email conformation from PA - can something be sent direct from the QF FF site?

yes, go into manage bookings in qf then select email option. Enter you email address as the from and tripit as the to and in it goes!

My Eyes Only
I use this app to store sensitive data such as passport info, credit card , bank accounts, website logins and passwords.
There are several similar apps. I think this one comes with a free Lite Version.

Maca44 - I reckon 2 days is pretty good!!!

On a normal day before my iPad I would watch a TV show on the way to work and the way back, make a few calls and I would need to recharge.

What I don't mind though is that recharging is easy as I am next to a laptop every day all day so I just need a small and light cable to charge the phone.

Tripit is great and after you have input the info you can easily access your flight details.
I use XE several times a day, with AFF, CBA, Whitepages and ebay the others I use frequently.

As much as I love TripIt, I'm really not a fan of the latest versions in terms of how it displays the info. Go back about 3-6 months or so, and it had a much nicer (NB. showed more info) layout.

I downloaded a few of the apps featured in the QFF magazine before coming to NZ and found the Frommers Travel Tools very useful when in a pub and wanting to work out how much my beer was. It has loads of tools and is free and worked beautifully. I’d recommend it.

WeatherBug wasn’t bad either, though the temperatures it gives me different from the MetService of NZ’s official temps so I’m not sure how much I can trust it? It’s about 4ºC out right now. The official temp is below zero.

since iPad is out, i'm not using my phone for anything other than calls/txt
coz iPad has better screen view for the maps that's what i mainly use it for and of course every news

and also to check my sites every now and then since i travel a lot ipad is perfect

I posted this in the Everyday Rewards thread, but last week the featured app was called Consume and it allows you to log into multiple account in multiple countries to check balances and whatnot. It has mane airline programs, only HH for hotels as far as I can see, multiple phone/internet companies in multiple countries, and even some bank balances can be checked it appears.

It’s a great app, made by the creators of iStat (mac app), and my sister and I have been using it so far to check our internet usage and accelerate downloads to optimise our usage before our month runs out. It looks a lot prettier than Bigpond’s site ;)

Even better, it looks like an iPad version is in the works that looks to bring a lot more functionality, and looks just as good.

I'm pretty sure that I heard about My Flights in this thread. I find it to be pretty good. It will store Amadeus bookings. I think there were a few hassles when the CheckMyTrip App was released.

Just noticed that the new version allows manual entry of non-Amadeus flight bookings. For mine that make it better feature than the CMT App and also seems to indicate any issues with CMT have been sorted out.

Slightly off topic, but ever since I upgraded my iPhone to (I think) version 4.1 it set off the security alarms when I enter various shops such as Grace Bros and Woolworths. I have tested it by having one of the shop assistants walk through with it, so ?

I don’t see what could be enabled in an iOS update that would make security alarms go off
