How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

Wow. In all my years flying QF, and having been on 581 many times, I can't remember a single instance of QF ever weighing carry on at the gate.
they did go through a phase in Canberra of weighing hand luggage - 10 maybe 12 years ago. I can’t remember whether it was just QantasLink and the small planes or all planes. Then they gave up and just gave people priority hand luggage label on the small planes and you leave it on the tarmac to go in the hold and collect it at the other end.

Have QF's Domestic carry-on allowance changed recently? I feel like it's changed seeing they actually state that you can have two Domestic sized cases (105cm/41in) with up to 7kgs per piece. I always thought it was one, with a personal item (or am I confusing that with VA?)

Both QF and VA allow 2 x 7Kg 105cm + a personal item on domestic Jet services.

It's been like this with QF for at least two decades.

I'm not sure when VA/DJ matched QF's allowance but it was several years ago at least.

One thing to remember is that laptops (with satchel) are usually considered an additional personal item, so if your bag weighs 8kg including a 2kg laptop, you can just take it out as separate carry-on, and then the bag only weighs 6kg.

But on VA's, it seems to indicate that the total weight of the two items combined cannot exceed 7kgs, not 7kgs per item. That's how I read it anyway.

I read it as each as in matching Qantas.

If it's total weight for both pieces was limited to 7Kg then the total linear dimensions for the two pieces would also be just 105cm (as per the line immediately above).

Poorly written, I know.

It would be interesting to know the actual weight. 3 kgs per passenger adds up to 1,500 kgs. That translates to about 800 kgs of extra fuel burn on an LAX-Melbourne sector.

QF should increase weight restrictions to 10kg and enforce luggage dimensions. Some of the bags allowed onboard are not proper cabin luggage size and take too much space in overhead bins.
I'd like to see a maximum size rollerbaord <7kgs. And then the laptop bag and the handbag and the shopping bag and the personal item and the....

I find it odd that not even J/P1/CL gets an increased limit (note I even gave QF the benefit of eroding WP even further there). Seems like giving very high status an increased 10kg limit would be very easy to do, especially as most of those passengers probably already have about that much stuff on them.

Witnessed last night Y PAX on TG MEL > BKK try to place his second carry-on in front of the counter so the attendant could not see. He had already checked in two bags. She asked to see and he finally gave in, and it must have been over 20 kgs the way he was straining. i walked past leaving him being told "its going to be a lot of money Sir!"

So about $2 per pax?

I feel like I am losing some opportunity each time I fly aus - Chile - I get a 3 x 32kg allowance of checked bags + carry-on - so total over 100kg, but probably never hit 20kg.

In one sense. But 800kg may also be the difference between making it all the way, or diverting.

I would think that overall the more people try to fly hand luggage only the more fuel airlines are saving. When I decide to check a bag I usually bring 10-15 kg of extra weight I don't bring when travelling HLO. When I fly to the USA with QF I think I'm allowed 128kg of checked bags, but I usually only have 10-12 kg of carry-on.
I don't know which formula airlines use to estimate passenger+carry-on weight? Is it airline specific?

I’m sure we’ve discussed it at some point, but it would be interesting to see just what the real load is. Weigh the passengers, all luggage. Everything. It is very rare to make fuel on a long trip....but not at all uncommon to go down. Sometimes you can readily see why, be it weather, or altitude blockage. Sometimes not...

- Safety: What's the SWL of the overhead bins? If everyone was jamming in 12kg bags, during heavy turbulence that would create some reasonable loads on the bins. I wouldn't want to be under one when a 12kg bag came flying out..

There's a little sign inside each bin that specifies the weight limit. The ones in the A330s I remember were 50kg.

How is carry on accounted for now? Just a set allowance per passenger?

Domestically (at least) the airlines prefer carry on so they can sell underneath for freight.

Note that the OP was referring to a domestic route.

Internationally for QF, the carry-on allowance for Y is 115cm, 7Kg + "Personal item".

Y+, F & J basically get the same as the domestic allowance.
