How many plane types have you been on?

Seems the caravelle, Convair 880/990, Dassault Mercure and Comet are all fairly rare? I've only been on the Caravelle out of those.

My memory isn't up to the task of compiling a complete list but I particularly remember an Electra 2 flight to NZ in around 1968, a few Fokker Friendship flights around regional NSW in the late 1960's, a CNS-CTN in a Bush Pilot's Airways DC3 in 1973 and a 2002 flight in a JU52 operated out of an air museum in Dübendorf.

I'm amazed you've not flown in a 777 jb. But I guess if you've had the same employer since leaving the military and that employer doesn't operate the type, I guess it's not entirely surprising.

I have. Forgot about it. Same with the Nomad. I've corrected the original list.

Can I ask - How did you find the A350 and which carrier were you with for it ? Considering it is the most modern aircraft I assume.


A350 was with Finnair (HEL-HKG). Very smooth, comfortable and quiet flight. I don't have a comparison with the 787, but if it's better, it must be really great.

Hmm, most of the usual, will have to make a proper list, anyone recoginse this landing gear? Flying into Chongqing in 1984. It was possibly a Yak or an Antonov, wish I had kept a proper diary!

The most unusual planes I have been in, well they are sort of in the air :) is the Tupelov Tu-144 along with the Concorde at The Auto & Technik Museum in Sinsheim, Germany. I do have photos but I haven't gotten around to scanning the negatives. (The Concorde and TU-144 on Display - AirlineReporter : AirlineReporter)

Done the usual 707, 747, 777, A380 etc, but years ago met a guy at Maroubra Beach pub one Friday might with a few surfing mates, Billy P. a 747 pilot for Qantas, over a few beers he told us all he was starting his own airline!, we were all very intrigued, he then said he bought a DC3 :) and called it Rebel Air.

The first trip was a day at Hunter Valley, so I rounded up a mixture of Aussie & Swiss drinking mates and a few ladies to fill the empty seats, the following Sunday off we went from Mascot, the plane levelled out, the curtain opened there was Bill dressed in flying boots, dark jeans and a scarf he looked just like Biggies :D except on his head he had a bright yellow beanie with large green horns, he said "high I'm you captain" someone yelled out "strap yourselves in!". Was a good day from the time we got on the bus to visit a swag of vineyards to our late return, none of us remember much except that I dropped my case of wine on the road outside my beach pad at 8pm, as luck had it only broke one bottle!.

The second flight months later was to the Melbourne Grand Prix, we near filled the plane, took what seemed all day to get there and back, we flew so low we really did see the countryside. Bill had taken out the internal storage and installed huge esky so we were near gone by lunch time at the track, don't remember who won the race, but apparently we all had a good time. Oh' my the things one does when younger :p

My DC3 flights were far more prosaic, and I think occurred with TAA. I used to fly them between Sydney and Port Macquarie, when I was going to visit my grandparents. I made several return trips while still under 10yo, and was looked after very well by the flight attendants. We used to get a very good view as the plane flew up the coast.

OK you wound me in.......

I've only flown twice on a DC3, twice was to Tasmania, twice was a return day trip, twice included big end-of-day pub events, twice the F&B selection was rubbish and twice was for a funeral oh, and twice I had no idea who the dearly departed was, nor did I know any of the family or friends! Work that one out.

Your thought about an Antonov might be right. I'm thinking either AN-26 or AN-32 looking at the rigging. And its an overwing design.

Is there a story with this one Straitman?

I seem to recall Kiowa's being Army aircraft based at Oakey. I also seem to recall you being a RAAF man.
No real story. I flew the Sioux at Amberley and Townsville, The Pilatus Porter in New Guinea, New Britain and Oakey and the Kiowa at Oakey when I was there doing a flag waving tour in the CT4 from 1FTS.
