How does Accor treat you as an Elite guest?

Looking to book the Sofitel Wentworth, Sydney. Classic and luxury rooms are described as having 'Bath'. Superior room described as 'bath/shower combination'. Detailed descriptions of all are the same including 'flexible shower head').

So I called to ask what those meant. After a while, the agent decided that the first 2 have a bath only while the bath/shower combo meant it had a bath and a walk-in shower. I mentioned that I hadn't heard of an Australian hotel room without a shower in many years, but the agent was unmoved.

Got a stay at Sofitel Wentworth Sydney coming up. Got a 'pre-check-in questionnaire'. Has pre-filled most of my details but wants ( * ) my DoB and Postal Address. A bit bored, I called them and asked why - its in my Accor profile.

"We can't see your Accor profile, only status"
"The additional information is just something we like to collect - it makes check-in smoother.

Bollocks it does - never been asked for that info anywhere else. Just a data gathering exercise. Anyway I gave my address as 1234 Green and DoB of a day last week and it seemed happy with that. Next screen - ah! The room up-sell; of course.

So I got a call today. Ah! Some follow-up. Not exactly. Someone looking at my requests put in the booking - quiet room, away from elevators & street noise; walk-in shower preferred.

Désolé ! Room booked Superior only shower over bath. I asked: Maybe an upgrade room might have one (hint...) . Désolé ! Only ones with walk in shower and away from lifts and street noise are the suites. Me: silent ... Keep silent ... Eventually she twigs. Oh, I see you are a Platinum but we should only upgrade one category but in this case we can do a suite.

Job done.

think it's coincidentally your 50th, 60th or 70th birthday on the date of your stay, no?

Would you believe 21st? 🥳

Welcome amenity: Welcome Letter, 2 packs of rice nibbles, Mineral water.
Recommend: Yes, as a Platinum, had complimentary mini bar. That consisted of 2 bottles of beer, a bottle of cider and five soft drinks. Replenished daily. Rooms are of typically Japanese small size but are well appointed.

It’s a good location with quite a few reasonably priced restaurants within walking distance and is across the road from useful places such as a Lawsons and 7-11 (IYKYK). Otorii Station is 5 minute walk away providing direct travel to Airport and/or the Tokyo subway system. The hotel has an airport shuttle service with somewhat limited hours. The hotel's prices are usually quite reasonable for Japan.

Seems this hotel was designed to have a lounge space on the second floor but management decided to offer free mini bar instead.20260129_162534.jpg

It’s used as an aircrew lounge
Maybe the aircrew use it when they need. Others do too - of the three large chairs facing the window, when walking around I surprised what looked like a staff member (uniform) having a nap in one.

Here's the welcome drinks list:

Looks like it’s gone downhill a little, they used to have all the tap beers available one of which was brilliant

Must have been very early days after opening in Nov 2023.

By the time I visited in Aug 2024 there were coughtails and beer, but no spirits

Property: Mercure Tokyo Haneda Airport

We stayed here in Nov 25, 3 nights in total.

It is a great hotel, clean, brand newish, id even say the rooms are a touch bigger than a hotel in Tokyo main CBD.

Great chicken yakitori next to Ororii station and great burger and ramen shop <3min walk from this hotel.

Would definately stay here again if required to get to airport early or you land later.

I'm heading over to Japan again in May/June and highly considering a 5 night stay at that Haneda hotel again too. Considering it's currently nearly half the price of the Ibis Styles in Ginza East and even more for the Mercure and Pullman, the extra travel time might just be worth it. Weighing it up though...

There was a small ramen shop nearby that did the best Chicken ramen i had found so far too.

I personally wouldn't base myself at Haneda for 5 nights in Tokyo.

If the other Accor properties in Tokyo proper are out of budget, look at non Accor...

I would and have done multiple times in the past, in fact will be doing it again mid Feb. I often need to go to Bigsight/Ariake so location is good for that. If money was no object I would be back at the IC strings but not at $600 a night.

Yeah we'll see, it's not locked in yet, i have a few flex bookings around while we wait for other plans to fall into place, then we'll choose one. I've done enough of the big Tokyo spots that i wouldn't particularly mind a stay a little further out and it's not a huge issue for where we will be going.

I need to get around to posting my previous Japan hotel stays in here actually...

Property: Mercure Hida Takayama
Status: All Accor Explorer Platinum
Room booked: 1x Superior double, 1x Superior 2single. Connecting rooms
Room upgraded/type: No (But wasn't expecting with connecting)
Rate: ~$250 per night for both
Early check in/late out: No but didn't require either
Free internet: Yes.
Free breakfast: Yes for main room, had to pay for the other but they did add the 30% discount
Welcome drink: Yes, 2x via the app and redeemable at the hotel restaurant. I don't recall the options but i believe we used it on a soft drink and wine at dinner,
Welcome amenity: Fruit and Mochi (i believe)
Recommend: Yes for the right price, it can really fluctuate depending on events. It's quite a nice little hotel and not far from the train station.

Been here before and loved it, so i had to come back. We needed connecting rooms and thankfully it was fairly easy to book and email them to let them know. At first they didn't mention an additional cost, then after booking they said there would be. I mentioned that was a bit sneaky but it wasn't a big issue. There was a sale that made it quite a bit cheaper so i rebooked and the new person said they would waive the fee for being Platinum. No fee at checkout! (besides the local accommodation fee).

Breakfast was only free for one room but we expected that might happen, discount granted for the 3rd person. Breakfast is probably more Japanese but still your usual bakery and so. Dinner wasn't all that wonderful but if you get stuck they did take the discount at least!

They have a public onsen and also a private onsen you can hire out for 45 mins. The front of the hotel has a nice fire going in winter, although was overtaken by a tour group (In November).

The information suggested there was something like a lounge, but details were quite limited, not that we really had time for it anyway. But it sounds like the superior rooms get access to an "afternoon free flowing" time each day, so that's a little something.

Sorry didn't get any of the hotel but the website is pretty spot on!
