How do QF know your important ?

Unless things have changed recently; op-ups are generally noted in the manifest - Point Upgrades are not!

Status of course, is.

I agree with comments re points upgrade. In fact cabin staff in J and CSM/pursur don't know whether you are fully paid J or C,D,I or if you're lucky enough, U.

That's the way it should be, they treat everyone equally. I did once get asked if I was staff [ie worked for QF] as I do like to chat to CSM, crew etc.

He was very interested in my QF experiences, and how QF compared to other airlines for service. When I told him my saga of dissapointing QF J experiences and the Neil "raw/dry/over rated" Perry menu, he said he was surprised he hadn't been notified I would be on his flight, as this would normally be noted on the manifest as well.

Interesting comment - given my repeated complaints to QF re the food recently I wonder if on my next QF long haul I should check the manifest ... if I fly on my QFF number that is...

I must say that I find it difficult to believe QF would have the resources to put notes into the manifest for every individual passenger who complains about something, and that the crew would then see these and be expected to know how they should react to improve the situation (or perhaps avoid it).

I saw the sheet of paper the CSM had in his hand as he spoke to the people in front of me on a flight yesterday, it had something along lines of the people being important because they were friends or related to somebody else important (Australian govt person), so how is it QF know this infomation ?

I know there was a thread of CIP's, but i could not find it and not sure if it said how they came about this infomation.
I am glad that I am not a QF crew member having to deal with this. Imagine being expected to grovel to people who think they are important! It's amazing how people think that when they get on a plane, they are somehow elevated to another level of importance over others. It's public transport for heaven's sake! :(

I know of a (female ) friend of mine who books her flights as Lady rather than MS or Miss or Mrs ! Seems she always gets good service etc !

I hope nobody was thinking i should be important, just wondering how and why people thought they needed to have some VIP type status.

Interesting discussions :)

Hi,
I found our recently that I must have struck a chord with the customer service section of QF. I am a Platinum, Life Time Gold member and recently emailed QF with positive and negative news about a recent AKL-MEL flight. Like it happens on queue to me the AVOD system died on my seat and the plane was full so nothing could be done. The CSM gave me a $50 duty free voucher and the CS staff rang me and gave me a $200 dinner voucher to the Flower Drum in Melbourne. Now that made me feel I was valuable.... A good news story from QF.:D More than I can sat JQ provided me when the engine died coming back from BKK last year.

It's not always about being important or a VIP etc. Again, the manifesto can simply note special occasion (like honeymoon) and the crew will "extra fuss" over you. It is not always about who you are, it can be about what you are attending or what you have achieved etc. Obviously they will fuss more over you in J because they can. If they over fuss in Y, the other passengers will notice and complain that they are not getting whatever it is that you are getting.

CIP = Commercially Important Passenger

Something I used to have back in the Ansett days due to the company I worked for and the alliance they had with Ansett.

Was a great leg up getting on flights with full loads and a long standby list... Friday nights MEL-SYD were usually spent in the jump seat up front (helped that I had to have an ASIC (Aviation Security Identification Card) for my job at the time).

Once Ansett went belly up, QF provided CIP status as well for the next 2 years (post 9/11) but in reality it didnt really afford me any other privilages other than getting a gauranteed seat on the flight i wanted.

IMHO I would rather not be fussed over, especially given most work travel at the time was in Y and I found the extra attention embarrassing.

There are several sheets you might see floating about in the galley.

First is the main passenger manifest. This in fact you probably won't see. It is a list of every seat, every passenger, every connection, every empty seat, every special meal, every frequent flyer, and any other operational information like VIP/CIP/OP-UPS. Plus a whole lot of other stuff including catering figures etc.

Then there is the list most commonly found in the galley which is a basic passenger list with you name, frequent flyer status with either your QF status or if your not a QF frequent flyer your status with oneworld. It also notes special meals and CIP/VIP/OP-UPS. If you upgraded using points - it is not noted anywhere.

On flights with First Class where there are First Class hosts (SYD/MEL/LAX/SIN/LHR) there is a sheet that tells us name, your itinerary from start to finish of your journey that day, who your traveling with, who you might work for, why you might be traveling etc. It also notes any important passengers in business and economy and chairmans lounge members.

Finally, there is a sheet that is given to CSM's to identify individual passengers that may require special attention. Usually where there is some serious damage control, but not always. This sheet doesn't make an appearance very much.

I have found that with points upgrades you don't get any special treatment like that - for instance no pre-completion of immigration information etc.

QF have to be told - usually it is the important family member or friend. It is too arrogant to ask for this for yourself! They need to pass on the flight number/sector flown and date for it to work.
FWIW it's the Personal Secretary (or Personal Assistant/ Aide in a commercial capacity) who calls the designated contact in the airline. Flight arrangements and payments are made directly. Flight and personal information (e.g. preferences) is then passed through the airline channels. No savings are offered, though extra courtesies such as personal baggage collection, accompaniment through customs etc etc are extended.

Does the CIP/VIP still print on the manifest and boarding passes since the QF systems upgrade. On my most recent flights I had noticed that there was no CIP on the BP's and the manifest only showed OW/QF status and no CIP details.

I must have missed this thread on my travels.I am sure QF have a system in place to identify who is important(or loved) to them.Other airlines certainly do.
On my first occasion in BA F the purser knew my fare status as I and 1 other fellow were given first choice with the menu and we were told there were only 2 servings of the lobster.
On AA there has been a lot of discussion of this on FT and TB.My experience is at MIA getting an upgrade in front of an EXP when the sector was the flight that would get me to EXP.When the EXP had finished his rant and gone away I went back and asked why I did get the upgrade and she said he always complains but your contacts are mostly praise.
I just wonder whether these profiles follow you when you fly with other airlines.Eg Op up 3/4 times on CX BKK-SIN to F.The last time missed presumably because now only a 2 class plane.Happened when both EXP and simple plat.
We will probably never know.

I don't think Qantas will own up to any favouritism but I have had 3 of my last 4 international trips upgraded - the last one with the wife in tow - and I am a low-ranked Gold who always flies discount economy. But I am a handsome, charming, modest, polite, tree-hugging Gold member, and these things obviously count.

But there was a humorous example of "discrimination" in the J-cabin on the flight this week. My wife was gleefully tucking into the soup after our on-board op-up from Honolulu when the FA presented me with a banana on a tray. After a quick glance at the name he worked out that we had inadvertantly sat in each other's seats and I was about to get a low-fat meal. He quickly swapped it for the yummy soup, but when the main course arrived and he presented my wife with the low-fat chicken dish she said she'd rather have the steak. He then cut her a deal along the lines that he would put her dish back in the oven and serve the rest of the cabin and then come back with whatever options were left. As it turned out the steak was very popular and he could only offer the sea bass, so my wife said the low-fat chicken was fine and in any case she had already "sampled" my steak.

So what Qantas should do is offer an additional meal preference section in your FF profile that also has a "please ignore if I'm upgraded" tick box!

But all joking aside, I have never noted any difference in service when I have been fortunate enough to be upgraded, so in that regard I find the QF staff to be very professional.

... and with a competent FA you should never notice.

Three years ago, I submitted a request and was granted a point upgrade to J MEL-HKG. (http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/open-discussion/stuck-in-a-flounge-hours-7710.html)

On the day of flight, the inbound 744 flying QF30 that was to operate my flight took an unscheduled landing in DRW. Qantas substituted a Pacific configuration 744 which meant a large number of op-ups - If I had not already had a points upgrade I would have been certainly op-upped.

The CSM came around the cabin with a list moving from specific seat to specific seat taking meal orders. He discreetly mentioned to me that he was taking the orders for us originally confirmed into J before those op-upped to ensure we received our preference.
