How do Hyatt treat you as an Elite?

Property: Park Hyatt Melbourne
Tier: Explorist
Booked: Standard King on Hyatt Prive Rate
Received: Upgrade to a King View. Asked for late out, but was told fully booked.

Was in town for a conference at the hotel, and the rate was reasonable especially considering the $150 credit + breakfast from the Prive Rate. The PH is definitely a more 'timeless' sort of design rather than the modern style, but everything was very functional and comfortable. Perfect.

So essentially no elite benefit? I have no WoH status and that’s what I got when booking on the FH&R rate …. actually I got a 4pm check out.

One-category room upgrade at time of booking is part of the Hyatt Prive benefits. Was 1 king view pre-upgraded at time of booking?

1 king view is a one-category room upgrade which should been upgraded at time of booking under Hyatt Prive. FHR upgrade is subject to availability on arrival.

Late check-outs under Hyatt Prive varied and depends on travel advisors connection with hotels.

Property: Hyatt Regency LAX airport, CA
Tier: Globalist
Booked: Standard King
Received: Deluxe King, high floor with views of the runways, as requested

Still my by far favourite hotel at LAX. The shuttle service was fast and efficient both ways and the check in clerk was very apologetic about not having a suite upgrade available anymore for me as a Hyatt Globalist. I received a very nice room on one of the higher floors with direct views of the runways which I had requested so I was happy with that. Those standard rooms are very generous in size and come with a full corner sofa and a King bed. The bathroom could do with a bit of refurbishment but overall the room still feels contemporary and well maintained.

My absolute favourite is the massive swimming pool which has rather cold and refreshing water- perfect after a long flight from Australia! They maybe could use one of those nets in the morning to clean the water of leaves and flower buds which unfortunately make it feel a bit “unclean” the way it is currently. But that’s really the only proper complaint I have, other than that I will continue to recommend this hotel to anyone arriving or departing from LAX.

Property: Andaz Miami Beach, FL
Tier: Globalist
Booked: Standard King with Suite Upgrade Award Applied
Received: Skyline View Suite

Such a disappointment! I partially went all the way to Florida for this new property as I LOVE the Andaz brand but the management of this particular hotel seems to be hell bent on destroying the brand. It started with a passive aggressive welcome email a few days before (don’t expect this, don’t count on that, extra fee here, extra fee there) which set the tone for a truly sad stay overall. Free non alcoholic drinks from the mini bar as it is standard at Andaz properties world wide? Nope. Friendly service and decent housekeeping? No. Getting your coffee cups replaced daily? Definite no, even after several complaints.

The hard product of the room was great (I had used a suite upgrade award for a fancy Skyline suite) besides the shower which did not even a rain shower head (wtf in a hotel like this?) but otherwise all great. But the service! Atrocious and most staff clearly did not feel like coming to work which hints at a really bad management. Overall, processes and staff behaviour was inefficient and purely managed. I know the hotel is still new-ish but the hiccups were systemic. Of the three main elevators, only one was operational during my stay which led to endless waits.

The worst was the pool and beach set up- by the (rather small and mostly shady) pools, you could not avoid the pesky staff trying to sell you their overpriced food and drinks but by the beach (Miami beach being the REAL highlight here), it was near impossible to ever get staff attention. Two of the seat and towel guys at the beach who ignored me for almost an hour (after tipping generously tipping earlier when they initially set up my beach chair) finally approached me to ask me weather “everything was alright”. This was AFTER I had finally walked up to the little booth myself to ask one their other chit chatting colleagues for assistance, and now those two suddenly had the audacity to push me for a Tripadvisor review (hey my name is Oliver and I’d really appreciate…). A convenient pre-printed QR code key tag was available right here so this is obviously wanted and aggressively pushed by management.

I had many other complaints about slack service and overall bad management and after complaining to several staff members, I finally got the attention of a friendly but very robotic “Front desk supervisor” who apologised profoundly and in the end offered a very generous compensation in Hyatt points which I gladly accepted. However, I can’t help but doubt that management will really heed the feedback as it felt too much as if all this is rather wanted and encouraged by the “higher ups”. Very sad for a new-ish Andaz, I sincerely hope that Hyatt corporate will step in to sort out this mess.

Property: Hyatt Place Houston NW Vintage Park, TX
Tier: Globalist
Booked: Standard King
Received: Standard King, Freeway side (not good!)

Do not stay here! I usually don’t make sweeping statements like this but this property js pure hell. I had kindly asked for a quiet room on a high floor and what do they give me as a Globalist? The exact opposite, a room towards the freeway, right on level with the road. I could hear the traffic noise from it side my room door already and the provided ear buds at the bed side tell you all that you need to know. I went down to ask the friendly question if there was any chance to get a room on the other side but the answer was “no, we’re full” and the reception lady said it with this typical tone that clearly indicates that she’s super pleased to give me this answer. I was promised an easy move to a different room the next day but alas, after a night from hell (it sounded like camping right in the centre lane of said motorway), the reception lady in the morning was even less interested in providing anything remotely counting as “Customer service”.

She was an obese white lady with a nose ring so I should have been warned but her attitude and arrogance was over the top. While speaking to her, a poor delivery guy came schlogging a whole heavy pallet of toilet seats into the lobby and she just waved him to the corner to drop them without a word or acknowledgement. I hate people like that- miserable with their lives and taking it out on everyone around them. Total mis-hire for a reception job like this! She told me to come back around 2ish and indeed, by then I could move rooms and while still quite noisy, at least the room at the back was a bit more conducive to sleeping.

Other than that, all typical Hyatt Place. Small pool (also straight out towards the freeway- lovely relaxing atmosphere), mediocre but free breakfast, limited staff and the ones I’ve interacted with were all god awful.

In the back of the hotel is a huge mostly empty parking lot and it’s a riddle to me why they could have not built the hotel there, a bit back to the freeway. Would never stay here again- first for the highway noise but more so even for the horrific unfriendly and arrogant staff.
