I normally do day trips to BNE but have to stay a night this week (Thurs 02/11/06) and cannot get into the Hilton (full). Hilton res said they had business suites availabile at the Conrad for just $670.00 per night. Pig's @rse!

I'd appreciate a few recommendations for something else, similar level, central location if possible.

Must be something going on; I've stayed at a few Accor properties there over the years but all seem to be running at a 70-110% premium on the cheapest rates.

Mercure; basic @$205, Novatel same price (but sterile), Sofitel $344

As an Adv+ member I can't seem to get effective discounts either (Sofitel @ $314, Novotel $190).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I don't stay in BNE hotels very often seeing I live here :)

But some inner city recommendations based on location, my recollection and opinions of those who I've chatted to.

Hilton. Love it. Pity it's booked out.
Conrad. They're dreaming @ $670 for a suite. Hotel is nice though - heritage listed, but refurbished.
Sofitel. Central location, I think recently refurbished. Nice hotel.
Sebel Suites. Even more centra than Sofitel. Never stayed there, but have been told it's nice from some associates.
Quay West Nice location if you get the botanical gardens/river views. Supposed to be very nice, but once again I havn't stayed there so can't compare to Hilton etc.

If looking for central, stay away from Spring Hill, South Brisbane/South Bank or the edge of the CBD (eg Marriott or Novotel). But Brisbane CBD isn't really that big, so the Marriott / Novotel / Spring Hill is only a 10 min walk from the centre mall etc.

Also - a lot of construction work is taking place in Brisbane at the moment, including a new Busway tunnel and lots of new residential apartments. Probably isn't a concern for the average business visitor (unlikely to be work happening after hours) but still something to keep in mind.

There's a Holiday Inn next to the train station on Roma Street which might be useful if you collect PC points.

Once when all surrounding hotels were full I was booked in at Oaks Lexicon Apartments - did not have the usual facilities one would expect of most hotels (minibar, room service etc), but not too far from anything - and the rooms were clean and modern. I had 1BR with separate living area which was a refreshing change from the usual cramped hotel room.

The Marriott has always been a favourate when in BNE. The exec level is prob one of the better ones that I have stayed at in AUS. It is a easy 10min walk from the Hilton.

Interestingly, the BNE Hilton is showing avaliability on Wotif for $490 for an exec level room however, I dont know if wotif needs to confirm with the hotel first?

I'd concur with Mal and Tiki (we're all BNE'ers).

Yada Yada, which hotel would suit does depend on where you need to travel to for work. Hilton, Conrad and Chifley on Lennons (or whatever it's called now) are the only hotels actually in the main area (on Queen Street). Others to consider (that haven't been mentioned) that are close by:

Carlton Crest - it's opposite City Hall, closer than Holiday Inn to central CBD.
Sebel Suites (cnr Albert & Charlotte Streets)
Rendezvous (255 Ann Street)
Chifley on George (opposite the Conrad)
Stamford Plaza - down on Botanical Gardens

Also FWIW, be aware that traffic leaving the city heading southbound (thus entering itcoming northbound) is currently in turmoil after one of the ramps to the South East Expressway (one of the two major routes to/from the City) has been closed due to a reasonable crack in the pier. Looks like weeks before it will be fixed. This is affecting city-bound/leaving traffic.

Peter,

I dont know your accomodation budget or exact needs, but I have an Advantage+ member for a stay voucher available.

This gives 50% of the rack rate at Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure (and some other places).

Prices are as mentioned above (i.e. Sofitel @ $314); please PM/email me if you would like to use it. (It also gives a discount on meal costs in those same establishments.)

On another issue; Wotif.com: Australia Hotels, Accommodation, Motels gives up the Hilton for $400 and the Conrad for $310. (Marriot @ $399)

The Grand Chancellor has some beautiful views. Rooms available @ $190/night.

serfty, Mal, Tiki, dajop, smithym, Lindsay Wilson, odoherty, JohnK ---

Many thanks for all of the good advice! It is much appreciated. The information that AFF members provide is second to none. :D

I have appointments within the city on Thursday and Friday, and we probably won't be venturing outside other than to get back to the airport.

I'll check out a few of these on the net. Thanks everyone! ;)

p.s. Ross - thanks for your very kind offer. I'll get back to you later today.

The Crest is fairly ordinary.

I always stayed at the Sofitel.

Ross, thanks for the phone call today and for the kind offer, and for express posting the A+ certificate to me. Very much appreciated!

I've booked two rooms at the Sofitel online. The rate was $354.60 per room (includes b/fast) so with the 50% discount it works out quite well.

Thanks again! ;)

I concur 100%:D :D
I always stay at the Marriott when in BNE. Its the best hotel in the city by far. (SYD is a different story!)

Unfortunately Brisbane hotels fill up quickly if something is on and the best way is to look up something such as wotif.Dont even bother looking for anthing around the weekend of the 24th november as not only is this the first ashes test but Billy Joel,Carole King and Elton John all have concerts that weekend(as well as Dave Hughes). The holiday inn is quoted on wotif as $1390 for that weekend!

That is fantastic! Peter I hope you enjoy the stay in BNE and Ross that is a kind and useful present.

I think Brisbane's hotel capacity is feeling the pinch as the city and state in general having been growing quite rapidly with no new hotels to increase ther supply of rooms.

We had an amusing situation last week where a senior employee had to stay overnight in Brisbane but could not get a room in any of our approved hotels, so the company ended up booking him in on the Gold Coast and using a limo to ferry him back and forth. Don't you just love company policy!!

I made a boo-boo. The rate of $354.60 was already discounted by 50%! That's makes for a pretty big rack rate!

Anyway, thanks again to Ross for pointing this out to me. I have cancelled and rebooked at Novotel which is more in the ballpark, and the discount voucher will still come in very handy!

Another example why travel policy needs to have ability to be flexible or someone with delegated authority to override it when it is reasonable to do so.
