Has tonight's EK414 arrival a dispensation to break SYD curfew?

Why not think out side the square?! (Whenever they stop procrastinating and build the second airport) build it 10kms off shore on reclaimed land (it's probably do-able but will cost a tonne of $$$ given the water depths, currents etc). Have an underground rail linking it up directly to Central Station. Remove the curfew restrictions as planes can fly over water and bingo, touchdown.

If anyone's been to Male, Maldives .... that's the idea that I am having in my head :)

Your obviously not aware of how deep it is of the Sydney coast, not much chance of reclaiming any land.

I have no idea ;) Just brainstorming ideas. How about something like an off-shore drilling rig?? but made the the size of an airport ;)

How about something like Miranda Kerr, Megan Gale, and Jennifer Hawkins serving Mai Tai’s to all guests as they board their next flight ...............About as much chance as the 'big rig'

It's already expensive enough as it is to make a standard oil rig, let alone one to accommodate the size of a sufficient airport (this is not a simple jigsaw or copy-paste problem - for the size and variable loadings that the "rig" will need to accommodate, you would need a lot more reinforcement across the entire surface).

Finding the budget and trusting the Australians to build it?

In theory, though, it's a nice thought.

Maybe they should do some process like they decided where to put the national parliament. Sydney can't have one, and Canberra can't have one either, so they're both important (and can even throw Melbourne in there), so settle it like they did with Canberra's construction: go halfway in between, construct a whole new town around it and call in some American architect to design it. :p

I stayed at Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach for a few nights.

OMG when the morning curfew was lifted! An experience I'll never forget!

Stay under a flight path for a few nights (or mornings) and then decide about curfews.

Is that simply because when the curfew lifted, everything was ready to land and thus there was a lot of noise, compared to say, a few night ops spread out. I'd imagine it would be annoying not to have the window or door open for a breeze while you sleep, but using a fan instead and having some good glazing isn't hard. If there was no curfew, I doubt there'd be the traffic you see in the day, thus the issue would be minimal for anyone that's smart enough to close a window :p

Of course the other solution is to move the airport more outside the city. Works in other cities - it seems.

Doesn't work, all that happens is people build closer to the airport and pretty soon start complaining about noise. If the answer is to build far away from residential, then the land under the flight paths should NEVER be allowed to be used for residential, otherwise it's same old story in a few decades time.

I had the good luck to fly SYD-ADL on this day.

Firstly at 16:30 my flight took off to the North. This means that aircraft were landing from the direction of botany bay, the south. Did the wind direct change latter in the night, because I'm not sure how the JQ flights could be on approach over Epping, if landing from the opposite direction. Flight Radar 24 shows aircraft landing from the south.

I lived at Carlingford for a little while. Aircraft noise happened sometimes but not that often and not that noisy. I now look out for that house when flying over now and we seem to be very high.

Also my flight flew at a lower level because of significant head wind that was projected to increase the flight time by 25%. The EK flight was going in the opposite direction and would have benefited from a significant tail wind.

Not unusual for the wind to change and force a runway change too. AFAIK you can't look back at old TAF's to see what runways were active. but did flight radar show that particular flight? Or has it dropped off the history too?

It would be good if when such dispensations are sought and given or refused and the media becomes aware of it (even if a journalist has to read AFF to discover the event), EK was asked for its view of proceedings.

This airline is now a large operator into and out of Australia. It is good at promoting its 'froth and bubble' events that it sponsors such as the Melbourne Cup, but as far as I can see goes to ground whenever there is an incident involving its aircraft. It could learn from SQ's response in the last 36 hours or so to the Baku A380 event (although in fairness, SQ has been criticised for allegedly taking a number of hours to respond.

For the cost of ANY offshore solution, you could BUY most of the noise-affected properties in Sydney.

EK did give its view.
"An Emirates spokeswoman said EK414 from Dubai landed at 11.13pm on Sunday after receiving dispensation from Australian authorities to land after the 11pm curfew."

The Jetstar and Tiger flights that cut it fairly fine where both flying south (out of BNE I think - Stradbroke Island fire causing delays out of BNE that evening) both landed towards the south.

EK414 landed towards the north (on 34L) ......

at least EK's statement wasn't disingenuous like BA's for the JNB incident. BA in that case said a BA 747 was 'damaged at JNB'. No mention that it ripped into a building and injured 4 people.
