so called them this morning to see if we could find a window seat, lovely lady found her a window seat no problems, then advised that J rewards seats had in fact opened up for the return leg (as she was advised reason she was by herself back there was because we were in J), offered to waive the fee to change her ticket from elevate to freedom, paid a fairly nominal upgrade amount to freedom and then was able to do a points upgrade to J on both legs home, winning! and thats her xmas present sorted lol..... virgin have always been amazing to deal with, especially after having to deal with qantas not so long ago.....

So, in the end, on the flight out from Aust, you got the upgrade (with points) for the daughter successfully?

I didn't tell my partner when I upgraded both of us on a recent flight and he didn't even notice the seat number on his boarding pass so he was surprised when I sat down in row 2...

its the flight home from la (well jfk actually but who knows what seats we will be blessed with on that one) the flight over she will still be in economy with window seat, she will certainly be thankful on the way home. had to pay to upgrade from an elevate fare to freedom, then done the 45k points upgrade.

Fantastic outcome for your 15yr! Pretty sure I was still travelling in the back of dads commodore to Canberra when I was 15 :)
shes a good kid and doesnt get much of anything, and we normally dont take them on holidays....but she the youngest and my velocity points account is healthy so figured it would be a nice treat, if she wants to continue to travel in luxury then best she work hard and make it happen for herself in the future.

Are you planning on utilising the pre-departure Emirates Lounge at LAX? You can always tell her you paid for access.

At a guess you are on a Delta operated flight. You may be able to select seating before you travel.

I found using the Delta app on my phone worked well in selecting seats but its been a year or so since Ive had to do it and things change. Worth trying though, if you have the Delta PNR

I did a similar thing with my daughter returning from the AFL grand final for her birthday. Used my platinum J upgrade.
I didnt tell her and as we entered the cabin I pointed to her row 2 window seat. Her face was priceless.

Did similar with hubby when we went to Chengdu, but then it ruined us for Y travel so theres that to think about 😆
after flying J to LA last time (which was my first for long haul) i had to fly Y on china eastern to shanghai, definitely realise pretty quick how good it is up front.
