Getting the Most out of flybuys?

The only benefit I see with Flybuys is that it not a choice between earning FB points or some other points. You can earn FB points at the same time as earning CC points for the same purchase.

I cancelled my FB account when my usual spend at Coles and Shell was not sufficient to earn enough points for an award before the points expire. This change for a lower redemption award would have kept me active, but I am not really tempted to start again now that I cancelled the account.

I was fortunate that much of my shopping at Myer resulted in large numbers of bonus points, based on my shopping patterns. With Myer leaving, my earning rate will be substantially lower, but hopefully I will get enough to be able to get some of the lower level rewards. Time will tell how it goes.

With a couple of teenage male mouths on the household now, my spending patterns are Coles are different to what they once were (how come most visits now result in around 300 Amex points?), so I might get some benefits from FB now  .

I have noticed that Coles seems to have stepped up the bonus points offers over the last year. However, many of them requiring buying multiple numbers of something to get the points. Living solo, there is only so much of some things you get through!

A shop at Coles gets me more like 30 Amex points :)

Buying multiple is not a problem for us! I didn't realise how much kids can eat until I noted that two family pies still needs to be supplemented with something else on the dinner table  .

Even with Myer gone it shouldn't be too hard to rack up the 2,500 points through supermarket shopping, Shell, Target and the like.

Before Myer sold MegaMart to HN there plenty of Bonus points to be had as they tried to encourage business ...

Re: Not enough FlyBuys points - so what good is it?

I've had FB for over 3 years now and as points had started to expire before being able to get anything I was getting frustrated. Recently I was able to get 10 movie tickets for 11 or 12k points, which is alright, but compared to ANY credit card rewards program FB is hopeless! The only reason i'm still a member is because its free and as others have said you can still earn CC points as well, so you're not losing anything.

The standard earn rate without any bonus points is just far too low to be effective and when you get enough points there's not much you can redeem them for.

Re: Not enough FlyBuys points - so what good is it?

I just redeeemed 7500 points that yielded $60 in Coles vouchers - not much of a return on a card we have had for 6+ years

Re: Not enough FlyBuys points - so what good is it?

Like any reward scheme it works for some people and not for others. I think I have done reasonably well considering it costs me nothing. Of course, when Myer leaves things may not go so well, but it has been a good run.

Agreed.

I should have said 'For me it's another useless piece of plastic'

or YMMV.

For me it's meant a return MEL-BNE-MEL flight, A Toaster and a dual digital Cordless phone system.

OT: The MEL-BNE-MEL flight was interesting; it was back in the days before $'s were charged for +++'s and I was able to upgrade to J using award certificates!

Re: Not enough FlyBuys points - so what good is it?

I've got about 4,200 points but have stopped using the card, as I see more benefits from the 1.5 points I get from my Amex Plat than the next to useless FlyBuys.

You could convert that into a $20 voucher (costs 2,500 points)

I't costs zip to use my flybuys and guess what; I still get 1.5 points per $ using my Maximizer at Coles stores at the same time ...

I collect 3 to 4K flybuys points every year and they build up to 9 to 10K before beginning to expire, before which I have a few options.

e.g. I currently have 9K and have a few expiring in July. Before then I can get at least $70 in FB Gift cards (use at Coles, Target, Officeworks, Kmart, Liquourland etc.)

I can probably do better by checking out and redeeming one or more of the options listed online.

Re: Not enough FlyBuys points - so what good is it?

One thing in particular to bear in mind here, and that is every time you purchase something from one of the companies that are linked into the FB scheme, you are paying for the program, whether you accumulate points or not.

So I use my card at any opportunity. I don't seek out program partners, but will by at Shell in preference if all prices are the same.

The point is, it really is something for nothing, and those that are not in the program have assisted in providing me with my toaster, magnetic underlay, tram car restaurant (quite good actually!) and a kettle...

Yes, keep an eye on them, they can take a while to build up, but spend em, or donate 'em if they are going to expire....

You can easily collect that many Flybuys points in one transaction. I don't use the scheme but I think there is a poster in the office right now for 4,000 bonus Flybuys points if you purchase 4 Goodyear tyres at the one time. Handy for anyone that needs new tyres and Kmart is relatively cheap when it comes to tyres.

Does Kmart do (NSW) pink slips?

Re: Not enough FlyBuys points - so what good is it?

My point collecting has certainly decrease since Myer left the scheme, although Coles do still have some bonuspoints on selected products from time to time. I'll see how it goes, but I just wonder that as the Coles-Myer group breaks up, whether it really has much of a future. But, I will keep collecting points while they are on offer

I don't think so. Those products are provided by insurance companies.
