Talking of PPE an article in the SMH about surgical masks.

I liked this from Victoria-
"A spokesman for the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services said it had "processes in place to detect any potential issues with PPE supplies, including masks, before they are distributed state-wide."

"Only PPE registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration is provided to hospitals in Victoria."

The problem is the masks basically aren't tested by the TGA.Here in Tas they did buy surgical masks by TGA accredited companies but tested them all in RHH.All Chinese masks failed. Some had been distributed but recalled. Now most supplied here are made in Shepparton.
The failed masks are what you buy in many discount stores and discount pharmacies.Always check where they are made.
The fake P2/N95 masks are way more widespread than even that article states......

Hmm, so from a scan of that, they don't think AU has done a good job as some others. Without a spreadsheet and list of every jurisdiction in the world its a bit hard to work out who is "acceptable".

The Japanese restrictions aren't a ban per say, they are preventing the entry, except of Japanese nationals, of anyone who has been in a listed territory within the prior 14 days.
Australians can enter Japan, provided they haven't been in Australia, or one of the other 99 listed states, in the 14 days prior to applying to cross the Japanese border.
Of the places that aren't on the list, I can't think of any that have direct non stop flights to Japan, thus any flight from a (in theory) "acceptable" nation would require connecting via somewhere that is on the list, which counts as having been to that country.
You could, in theory, enter Japan by boat, provided you have spent at least 2 weeks at sea.

I don't think Japan stopped international connections, but if you had to change airports, you'd be out of luck.

Though tourist arrivals in Japan in April were 99.9% down on April 2019 numbers.
April is also one of their prime months for tourism with the Cherry blossoms out.

Of the places that aren't on the list, I can't think of any that have direct non stop flights to Japan....

That sounded like a challenge :D I found one - CMB-TYO non-stop on Sri Lankan. Although visas for Sri Lankan nationals to Japan are cancelled.

This has just been released by Medical authorities in Singapore.

Academy of Medicine Singapore

“ Based on the accumulated data since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the infectious period of SARS-CoV-2 in symptomatic individuals may begin around 2 days before the onset of symptoms, and persists for about 7 - 10 days after the onset of symptoms. Active viral replication drops quickly after the first week”

Perhaps we need not be so worried about those late positives from overseas travelers after all ?

Thank you.

Active viral replication drops quickly after the first week, and viable virus was not found after the second week of illness despite the persistence of PCR detection of RNA. These findings are supported by epidemiologic, microbiologic and clinical data. These new findings allow for revised discharge criteria based on the data on the time course of infectiousness rather than the absence of RNA detection by PCR testing, taking into consideration both the clinical and public health perspectives, including the individual patient’s physical and mental well-being.

So this also supports the 14 day period, combined with monitoring of symptoms, as being a valid one for quarantine/isolation length, and also that testing at its end is not required. Plus that where tests have been done and gained post quarantine positive results that these are not an actual guide to infectiousness.

Lots of people keen to get back to the gym, however, laboratory swabs of typical gym equipment has shown

"The average exercise bike harbours 39 times more bacteria than a cafeteria tray. Typical free weights have 362 times more germs than a toilet seat. And the treadmill you're running on averages 74 times more bacteria than a typical public bathroom faucet." 🤢

Hmm, and people take and use their phones there, after their hands have touched all the equipment and bring them home.

Wonder how many little epicentres of CV breakouts will surround gym usage?

I remember when Prince Charles developed the illness and later Boris, both said after 7 days they did not need to isolate. Of course ongoing symptoms keep some people unwell much longer but not infectious.

I still think that a negative test is required after quarantine from overseas in case that person experienced an extended incubation. It makes no sense after paying for their stay to not test.

Gyms just need to be managed. Like everything else. In other places they haven’t been seen as risk places to create a hot spot.
