General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

Good they are getting organised because the booster looks like it will be needed sooner than everyone thought and UK doesn’t want another disaster of a winter again!
Maybe I missed it but is there the same sense of urgency for a booster of AZ?

The boosters for all major vaccines were expected to be needed 6 months from 2nd dose, it is to deal with variants. Note it is much quicker to modify mrna vaccines for variants than AZ/J&J. I think you will find it is a case that AZ dont yet know when they will have a version that is effective against South African strain (the one that is devastating India right now)so they arent pushing sales.

As rollout begain in northern hemisphere in December, they wont have material real world data on need for booster after 6 months in terms of boosting antibodies (rather than dealing with variants) until end of May.

That said annual fluvax only provides protection for 6 months, its just that people dont tend to bother with a booster iver summer as less flu circulating and wait til Autumn.

All about the marketing then hey?

Call me synical, but if boosters are recommended then that is guaranteed sales. And richer countries are also willing to pay a higher price than poor nations sourcing via covax facility.

Israel is the one to watch give basically fully vaccinated by end of April, do they start boosters in Sept or earlier?

Some people trying to indicate its an issue that boosters are needed, but this has been an expectation since the start. Fluvax has reall short effacacy, and most other vaccines also need boosters over time.

UK is starting in Autumn so that's September.

And yet the bulk of Aussies under 50 wont have even had their first dose by then.

The topic of conversation with kiwis in my team yesterday is that they will likely fly to NZ in Sept to get vaccinated with pfizer as wait here is way too long and uncertain here.

I was talking to a lady yesterday who is an avid (or should I say rabid) anti-vaxxer.
Her points were
  • I now have Covid as I have had my first AZ vaccine
  • Some businesses in America now are not allowing anyone to enter their premises is they have had the vaccine.
  • India is grossy overestimating the number of cases and deaths
  • There is no risk of getting Covid in Australia
That was all I could cope with before telling her that all her facts seems dodgy. She said there is a website where she gets all her information.
Her husband said he would wait as long as he could before getting the vaccine.

So one can only wonder what he is waiting for that will spark him into action.
Read a story online where if a grandmother gets the vaccine her rabid anti vax daughter won’t let her visit the grandkids.

The NZ and Singapore vaccination ads have a bit more life than the Aus campaigns:

And even the latest issue of the MJA has an article on how our vaccine messaging is failing and should be simpler.

That is a good article. Really positive suggestion, especially regarding images. Obviously our government chose the wrong marketing people!

Yes I agree and thank you @drron for posting.
They really need to stop showing video footage of people being injected. I’m not particularly worried about shots as I have two long term allergy shots every month for the past 2 years and even I’m cringing at that footage.

And here is another report that really doesn't feel like a vaccine problem.

So a fellow who says he was perfectly fit yet was on blood thinners, had diabetes plus has had coronary artery stents has a brain bleed. The blood thinner sounds a bit more likely to be the problem.

That is absolutely irresponsible reporting by the media.

Companies like Pfizer spend a heap on research for new products that ultimately may never come to market. If they can’t cash in when they have a success then there won’t be the incentive there for them to do the research to develop new products.

Look where AZ not profiting off their vaccine has got them, being sued by the EU and if they lose facing potentially a big loss on producing their vaccine.
