SQ are proposing an increase to fuel surcharges by upto US$10 from May 15th. I wish airlines would just accept that higher fuel costs are here to stay and absorb them into the price of airfares.

Singapore Airlines net profits hit by higher fuel expenses

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Singapore Airlines (SIA) said net profit in the year to March fell 8.3 percent annually to 1.24 billion Singapore dollars (789 million US) as fuel costs took their toll despite record revenues of 13.34 billion dollars.

SIA revised its profits for the year to March 2005 to 1.35 billion dollars from 1.39 billion dollars stated previously.

For the fourth quarter to March, the carrier's net profit totalled 266 million dollars on revenues of 3.39 billion dollars.

The full-year earnings were below analysts' average forecast of 1.26-1.35 billion dollars.

<snip>

A hike in fuel surcharge on tickets by up to 10 US dollars since May 15 is only expected to help the airline absorb part of the cost from higher oil prices, SIA said.

I doubt that they will ever go away. The airlines now have a way of getting cash out of their FF's whenever an award is redeemed. :(

Unfortunately very true. And they also have a free revenue stream when they sell you a ticket operated by another carrier! The issuing airline keeps the YQ revenue and does not pass it on to the operating airline. So on my up-coming DONE4, QF collects $98 for each "international" sector, even ones like the BA service LHR-FRA! That is probably more revenue than BA will get from their portion of the fare  . Can someone explain to me how QF incurs higher fuel bills on that LHR-FRA segment?

A simple trans-tasman is not that much lower in so called taxes.

Yep, MEL-AKL-MEL... last week $176.32, this week $196.58  .

What's happeing is that using points for short flights (< 5 hours) is becoming very wasteful.

You can get MEL/AKL fares for $133 (+TLC) eachway, generally on the same flights the awards are available; this equates 16,000 points to that $133.

Indeed. I have now come to the conclusion that my QF points will only be used for upgrades from now on, and I will use AA miles for any flight redmeptions. Flights will not credit to AA, while CC spend is likely to remain flowing to QF for the upgrades. At least I have LTG to retain lounge access in the LOTFAP and some waitlist priority for the QF upgrades. However, it would be a much tougher choice without the QF LTG status behind me.

This policy of charging fuel fines on reward tickets is continuing to undermine the value of the QF FF points.

I must correct my incorrect information here. QF will collect US$19 for the fuel fine for Europen flights, including my LHR-FRA, and not the $98+6 that I had previously posted. Better, but still the revenue remains with QF and I fail to see how QF needs to collect a fuel surcharge for a sector in which they do not incur any fuel costs.

It's just wrong for them to be gouging like this. It's similar to freight forwarders who invent all manner of surcharges (e.g."container imbalance fee") that eventually become permanent fixtures.

It's even more ridiculous in reverse. Fares as low as NZ$99 +++ each way. I am too lazy to look up the +++ but imagine it is roughly A$197 converted to NZ ie quite a bit more than the fare, and this doesn't even include the NZ$25 departure tax.

I am trying to book a QF WHY award SYD-SIN on Dec 27 and most routings are via woop woop so the only viable routing for 30,000 points becomes SYD-PER-SIN. Anyone care to explain how they can justify $194.77 in taxes and charges for this one way trip!

I think I will need to look for creative ways of getting there. Like a BA WT+ special leaving September SYD-SIN and returning early Jan SIN-SYD and then purchasing an el cheapo ticket in Singapore leaving early October SIN-SYD and returning Dec 27 SYD-SIN.

Hi there

Tried to get MEL-SIN one way and all I could get was MEL-SYD-CNS-SIN.
Taxes & Fines $220.98

SIN-HEL-LHR-HEL-SIN only cost S$880 + S$143 tax

Cheers

IMO there's no justifiaction other than profiterring...

FWIW, there's a $98 fuel levy PER-SIN and $31 FOR SYD-PER.

More here: Fuel and Insurance Surcharge (YQ Tax)

The YQ component is actually $104 now when you add in the "insurance" levy as well.

Why do I get the feeling that the QF on-line award flight search engine is tweaked to find connecting flighst rather than non-stop flights, thus increasing the Fuel Fine revenue?

Same thing happened a few months back when I booked BNE-PER-BNE awards - the only route available for weeks was with connections in ADL, SYD, MEL, CNS etc. Nothing non-stop. Perhaps I should have looked for awards SYD-PER-SYD or MEL-PER-MEL to see if they were offerred via BNE  .

IMO that's just Qantas trying to fudge the issue; they quote International YQ as $104 which is the $98 fuel + $6 Insurance Surcharges and Domestic as $37.60 which is $31 fuel and $6.60 Ins. (note the 60¢ GST).

I generally use the "Multiple Destinations" option when I am searching awards on line. This seems to get around any issue with this.

That is QF's clever way of making extra money from you using your points.

Which carrier(s)? AY only? Or is BA included? I don't understand the tax component you mention for such a long trip.

I have been looking at booking from Singapore flying around Dec/Jan for the following routes, SIN-SYD-SIN is only S$800 + S$331 tax, SIN-BNE-SYD-BNE-SIN is only S$800 + S$384 tax, SIN-CNS-SYD-CNS-SIN is only S$720 + S$407 tax.

You can see the significance of the tax component. In the final case it is more than half the fare!

True, but does not make us feel any better.

In my opinion this is where the stupidity stars to shine! International vs Domestic! SYD-PER is 2,041 miles whereas PER-SIN is 2,420 miles. The distances almost the same yet the fuel levy is more than 3 times for the international sector. I suspect this is the reason why the QF codeshare on the short AY flight SIN-BKK-SIN is about double the cost of the actual AY flight.

I use the "Multiple Destinations" option almost always when searching for award flights. But to be fair to QF I was looking for flight on Dec 26/27 so I didn't really expect a direct flight to be available.

Try the latest sale SIN-DRW-SIN $348 + $323 in taxes. Taxes are almost the same as the fare, common place domestically but not internationally.
