Flight redirected at check-in. Extra status credits?

I took a flight ASP-BNE on Sunday and just before check-in was notified of changes to the flight. Got to the counter and they were able to tell me the flight was now going via AYQ due to the need to drop off an engineer to fix a stranded plane. Must've been an urgent job since he wouldn't have been more than two hours later to have driven there from the time I got the notification rather than divert a plane full of passengers the wrong way (added an hour and a half to the flight time).

Anyway it took a while for the points to post and I wondered if I would have the ASP-AYQ leg counted for status credits, but no luck.

What do the experts think my chances are of getting Qantas to shell out the extra 10 status credits for my (limited) discomfort? I had a connecting flight which I didn't miss so it's not like I was in a rush..!
 
Same flight number the whole way? If so you aren’t due any extra SC’s
 
The problem as I understand it is that while you can request ORC (Original Routing Credit) for the flights you paid for even if they gave you a more direct route, if your flight was simply diverted, there is no extra leg and you're not due any additional SCs, you just had bad luck, like those who end up delayed for hours due to IRROPS.

Yes same flight number, we didn't even disembark at AYQ, just refuelled, dropped him off and went on our way.

Oh well, never mind. I wasn't really expecting anything.
 
Extra SC only if:
1)additional sectors with different flight numbers and,
2)The additional sectors are on a regular service operated by the airline or partners, and the passenger has to disembark and re-embark.

ASP-AYQ is not a route operated by the airline. A diversion does not usually result in additional SC if it’s a splash and dash and pax remain onboard.
(Edit @justinbrett reminded me that it does)

So a LAX-MEL that does LAX-SYD-MEL for extra fuel where passengers remained on board will just get LAX-MEL SC, but an LAX-MEL that terminated in SYD and MEL bound pax then have to get a separate SYD-MEL flight could put in a case for LAX-SYD and SYD-MEL SC.

Original routing credit occurs like this:
A passenger has LAX-MEL, MEL-SYD ticket. However the flight does LAX-SYD-MEL due to fog in MEL. As a result the SYD passenger gets off in SYD. That pax is eligible for ORC of LAX-MEL and MEL-SYD plus a refund on the unused MEL-SYD ticket.

As others have noted no extra SCs or points but you have qualified for a post in:
 
Happens all the time with weather, medical diversions etc - though not necessarily such a diversion in the wrong direction. Same outcome though, you should - and will - get your original credits of points and SCs.

OT, but in this scenario either the pax is travelling HLO or else not on QF :p. If it was QF and there were checked bags, the pax would be told 'we are not going to bother to locate your bags and offload them for you in SYD so now you are going to have to go LAX SYD MEL SYD' :p:rolleyes:
 
No extra sc’s but I hope that the weather was good as it would have been a stunning flight! Took us a lot longer than two hours to dive that distance.

I don't doubt that what you are saying could reasonably be an airline's response to a passenger wanting to get off at SYD rather than to go the long way around via MEL.

However we had 2 experiences of a LAX-MEL // MEL-SYD turn into LAX-SYD terminating:

Here is the actual scenario:
QF94 LAX-MEL diverts to SYD due to fog in MEL. I call it a "splash and dash". The aircraft parked at a remote refuelling stand.
The CSM came around and spoke to us and noted that some passengers including us had SYD as the final destination, and said that the Captain would try to offload those passengers if possible - so not guaranteed. After a short period, A bus and stairs came around and several passengers were offloaded with HLO. We were told that checked luggage would remain onboard and would be sent on to us. Disembarkation was through L1 (via F class)

Bus took us to international terminal. Went through immigration/customs/quarantine. Very easy when no checked luggage.
The checked luggage went via SYD-MEL-SYD and was delivered to us later on the same day with QF agents updating us with status of bags - I think they rang to say the bags have arrived back in SYD, and then bags are with courier and gave us the reference number.

I rang QF and got the MEL-SYD sector refunded with ORC. It was a bit spooky because when I rang QF, they had notes of our arrival into SYD and the MEL-SYD was already in the process of being refunded. THE ORC was not a problem either.

How good is that!: Don't have to reclaim checked luggage and lug it all the way home. Fast exit through SYD airport. Luggage delivered to home FOC, and free SC for the MEL-SYD sector. Attendance at customs/quarantine not required though the arrival cards were completed at SYD.

But yes its a bit OT.
 
Getting further OT but @Quickstatus you were lucky and I've had the opposite experience. LAX - MEL diverted to SYD due to bad weather in MEL. Sat forever on the tarmac in SYD. One couple were allowed off in SYD and many other pax started voicing complaints that the rest of us were being told to sit down, shut up and wait. Eventually there was an announcement that the couple who had been allowed off were going to a funeral in SYD and nobody else was going to be allowed the same luxury so basically too bad so sad for everyone else and we all just had to wait because it would be way too hard for QF to work out whose bags were ultimately destined for SYD and offload only those bags.

The only upside was that we were on the tarmac so long and I played "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" so many times that I ended up winning the $1 million.
