Or get pre-assigned one
Which airline allows pre-allocation of exit rows without paying? Or are you suggesting waiting until check-in?

Have you flown in these seats; they are in the longhaul CX product - you do not see them much shorthaul CX. For anyone over 5'8" or 90Kg they are apparently quite horrible.
No I have never flown in these seats but there has been positive feedback about these seats on AFF from non-recliners and as I do not recline the thought of not having the person in front recliningt into my personal (much needed) space sounds very appealing.

Along with the issue of the herringbone J seats being small, perhaps CX underestimated the physical size of passengers.
Well I have sat in the herringbone business seats and I do agree that they are very small and feel extremely claustrophobic.

Funnily enough a friend of mine who clocks in at 6'4" loves the CX sliding seats, so he's unhappy to see them possibly going.

Yep, in both directions for that matter.

The irony is that their F seats are one of the widest in the sky.

And SQ the widest J seat in the sky. Go figure:!:

Well their main market, Asia, isn’t made up of that many large people ;)
They are definitely getting a lot larger.30 years ago I would be head and shoulders above everyone in Asia. Many now look me in the eye.and quite a few now weigh more-and i have not shrunk in size.

Which arilines assign an exit row during the booking process and how much luck would be required to get an exit row.?

Qantas can, and it does require a bit of luck.

Also, they know you haven't paid so there are a couple of issues:

a) Trying to assign a seat to any other flight on the itinerary, or in fact just going through the seat selection process, results in a request to pay up,
b) At chech-in, you may, or may not, find yourself shunted to another seat that bears no relationship to any preference in your profile.

Yes that appears to be a glitch in the software.

Personally I can do without all the associated side effects just to have an exit row pre-allocated for one sector in a multi sector itinerary.

I flew the herringbone seat a week and a half ago. The previous trip I disliked it but on this trip I enjoyed it much more.

The privacy was great except when the clown beside me kept getting her husband to talk to her by leaving his seat and standing in front of hers - and mine.

After a zillion years of marriage by the look of them they still had something needing to be discussed for hours on end, so as he continued hovering over my seat he got the idea his presence was not wanted by my hairy eyeball stare at him.

He moved on. Eventually.

In all honesty I think the CX J product is streets ahead of QF, BA and others, but recently tried MH and loved it.

Yeah, there are photos floating around (I think from upper deck 747) which show when it's dark, they do resemble coffins all lined up.

I get my first flight on a 73A next week, so looking forward to that to see what the fuss is about.

I remember that's what we used to call the first BA seats that came out in the early 90's.

Remember they were designed by a yacht designer, for the appreciation of innovation in small spaces

As for CX I have done long haul in the coffins - you do want to be average weight and Height I reckon. But certainly very private.

For me the great CX service makes up for any deficiency.

Cheers spruce

I'm flying CX J class on full award to Toronto via HKG at XMAS, and this thread has scared the s**ts out of me!

I heard rumours that they were doing a new fitout in their biz class by XMAS, not sure if that's the case?

I'm flying with my partner, and I'm actually a little dissapointed we'll be so isolated through the trip. I'll probably end up being one of those guys PostCode is referring to- so sorry in advance. ;)

hehe for me I rather like CX J and even though I always fly with my partner, it gives us a few hours on board to just relax and do our "own" thing. I like flipping open the IFE and then it boxes me in and I can just ignore everything around me for the flight :)

the only negative, is that we like to compare food when in business/first class, and its very impractical to see what she's having, and to show her what I'm having. And we can't like taste test each others.

Don't the ottomans have a seat belt so you can dine together?

Similar Virgin and AirNZ seats do.

Not sure if you mean F serfty, but we flew J on both 744 UD and 333 in June. The ottomans were not fitted with seat belts; IIRC, they bore signs to the effect that they were not seats.

Correct arraitch. There are signs specifically stating that the ottomans of a CX J seat are not seats. So no co-dining in CX herringbone J.

In any case, the ottoman cushion area is quite small. Only non-overweight people could probably sit in it, if even tolerably.

No they don't have seat belts, and in any instance I think they would be wayyy too small for most people's bottoms ;)

In the CX F suites, there is room for co-dining and the mahogony? table that comes out, is definitely roomy enough for couple dining.
