From what I can tell, QF have 25 747's still in the fleet.

The order that they are retiring them seems to be random (as it does with the 767's). I can understand for OJH and K.

Are there reasons why it is not done in age order, and what are the factors behind retiring them in the order they are?

Number of cycles, flying hours and general condition of the aircraft would be the main drivers I would imagine. Plus actual fuel consumption.

QF are letting the leased birds go as a preference then age.

OJN was leased in 2006.
OJB is the oldest in the fleet
OJP is leased - Birrell Leasing

Would layout also factor, presumably as swapping seats around to fit in with a route would take time when they could just retire a bird that didn’t have an appropriate layout?

Cycles on the air frame, time till their next major overhaul just to name a few. Probably plenty of other criteria that QF use to determine when to retire it.

Nah, just suspect they will look after their first 744, still remember the first 744 ever arriving into SYD, pity it was UA, what a game changer she was.

Fair enough. Wonder where she will go. Would be amazing to see two 747s on the ground at Longreach.

1 x 744 out of the 5 planned for retirement in FY13 has already left, with VH-OJG leaving Australia last week. Active 744/744ER fleet is now 20.

OJH, OJJ, OJQ are due to leave next and in fact, whilst unconfirmed, OJH may have already been withdrawn in the last week.
