Card application declined!!!

Got a letter from EDR today saying thanks but my card application did not meet "the banks" lending criteria. I called up and asked them to double check the application, to which the lady told me everything was in order. I then enquired if she could have the application rechecked by themselves or the bank, as a person earning $xx_xx with multiple rental incomes of would not normally have any credit denied, let alone a card such as EDR. I asked her that the fact that this has happened is very surprising to me, and given the figures in front of her would she agree? She did, but fell back onto the line of "bank lending criteria".

Anyone have similar trouble, or get EDR to re-cough their application.

Before anyone asks, credit situation all in the green...

How many cards or other credit facilities have you applied for in the last 2 years? Just the number of applications exceeding the bank's lending criteria threshold can be sufficient grounds for declining.

I have, but not with the EDR. I got my EDR, but another card I applied for at the same time was declined. I had originally thought it was due to the rather inflated credit limit that the EDR CC came with. I fixed that, reapplied for the other card and was declined again.

The thought occurs that they are on the watch out for card 'churners'. People who regularly flip cards in search of free points. I may be off base with that, but it smells suspicious to me as I also have no reason to beleive I'd be declined credit.

^^ this is probably the reason

All I can suggest, is that one notes down the credit companies that declined your application(s), keep a copy of the decline letter they sent you.

I am sure that even though they will say they don't, I really think they will keep your basic information and target you at some stage in the future (either by mail or phone) Now if & when they target you I would be asking for the same "special" deal offered originally, or a "Very Very Special" deal specifically for you for wasting your time on the previous application process.

This is my plan of attack, I am sure the company concerned in my situation will eventually realize their mistake and will welcome me with something too good to resist...

If on the other hand I don't hear from them again, then as the Federal Member for Warringah once said "Sh?t Happens" and I'll definitely get over it...! :)

Is this the first decline for an AFF member?

TBH, l was expecting a decline with my application, but got a "green light" and a very generous credit limit too (which l also decreased when l was activating my card).

As others have mentioned Undercover Brother, applications for CC's in the past may have been a contributing factor for this decision? I have personally applied for a few home loans (re-finance) and a few CC's recently (ie, within 3-5 years), so l am wiry of applying for more in the 'near term' and refusal will probably be the answer if l do...

I like it - good plan. I think I'll do the same.

The company in question has peppered me with applications over the months/years so I was pretty surprised when they declined. I'm sure it had something to do with the simultaneous application/acceptance of the EDR.

They normally only look at the number of applications in the last 24 months at the most. Some banks are even only in the last 12 or even 6 months.

I got approved for an EDR Qantas card with no ID check, and no other checks, with a limit of about 17% of my income. I've also started a new job in the last 3 months, have never banked with HSBC before and have had at least 2 other CC applications in the last 12 months.

Sometimes the lending criteria really doesn't seem to add up.

I got rejected too, a couple of times now haha I easily meet the criteria but I
may have applied for too many cards in the last 12 months. Having said that an ex of mine applied in store with an on site representative and shouldn't have been approved but the guy kept saying no don't write that write this etc, so I assume he was on commission. So possibly instore may go through different approval process than online...any thoughts

Also may depend how many existing cards you have. If your total limit exceeds a certain % of your salary already they may decline. I'd say the guy was on commission - normally they wouldn't tell the sales staff what the criteria was, but I guess they can start to work it out once they see a few cards decline and others approve.

This is the weird, thing, only have 1 credit card, the Westpac Earth Plat for over 2 years, no other cards applied for in that period. It gets paid to $0 weekly. When I say I am confused and concerned, I mean it. There should be NO reason why I should be declined for any credit card, even just a EDR one.

The problem cannot be with the figures I provided, I genuinely do not get it.

If you really cannot understand would suggest you get a copy of your credit report off Veda and/or D&B, there may be something on it you are unaware of (and/or is incorrect). Both organisations allow you to do this for free (bit of a pain but doable). It is possible that there is incorrect info on your credit file that the banks are making their decisions off, including (worst case) people applying for credit in your name you are not aware of (identity theft). If incorrect you can apply to get it corrected because if there is and it's wrong it will keep being wrong for future credit applications until you fix it!

It is probably worth checking your credit status as burmans suggested.

I wouldn't worry too much though. This was the weirdest application I have been through to get a credit card.

I applied for the Woolworths card one week before an Amex Plat Charge Card, and the latter came through in 8 days whilst the Woolworth's card took nearly three weeks and involved me having to go to a Woolworth's store to present I.D.

My credit limit is relatively low too, not that I'm complaining because it is just a back up card for Amex.

I felt that HSBC were cautious if you did not have any history with them.

In my case this is not true, they gave me a $20k limit straight up, no questions asked. And I have never banked with them whatsoever. But I do have property they would get their grubby mitts on if I didn't pay up...:!:

So it's a safe bet for them.

Actually I believe Amex to be more cautious in my opinion...

This just gets more bizarre for me. My credit limit with the Woolworths card is one fifth of the credit limit on my Amex Ultimate card! (Mind you I don't need it increased I spend $1 on the Woolworths card for every 10 on my Amex cards)

I'm not the most attractive money earner for a credit card co though, I pay my balance in full every month without fail. Although I guess the transaction percentage is worth having.

I think financial institutions would be wary of churners, but hey how do then know when a credit card has been cancelled or a limit reduced? I have been lucky to pull this in the last few months.

Any suggestions for the next card JohnK?

It is a game isn't it!

Thanks Awilcockson for your reply on paying taxes.
Thought about it then put a personal quarterly tax payment on it as that meets their rules.
