Everyday Rewards Qantas Credit Card

The wife just got a text from woolworths/qantas that said:

" a temporary block has been placed on your woolworths credit card as a security precaution. Please call the customer service number on your card"

Our online access to the account was also blocked, on phoning customer service we were told that our cards have possibly been compromised and new cards will need to be issued. They are unable to give me any details about the compromise other than to say it could have been within the last 12 months, and they can't be sure if it has been compromised.

We have had the cards since about xmas and there has been no unauthorised purchases on it. I am intrigued as to why they are unable to give me any details about the possible compromise and the department that issued the warning has no details, and not even able to tell us which card it was that may have been compromised.

I'm inclined to wonder whether they have had an internal security breach, anyone else experienced this in the last few days?

Good thing they caught it Thom

(OT; l had my BoQ Visa Debit Card canceled last weekend while l was in remote QLD. Got a call from BoQ informing me my card was already canned and a new one was on the way. I guess with the high AUD, were becoming the honeypot for criminals with the high AUD....)

Nothing in relation to my card so far. I'd say you are on the money with the probably internal security issue though.

Yes, maybe. There was a widespread security breach about 3-4 weeks ago (maybe longer I can't quite remember) of several major corporations customer databases. All these databases were held by a single third party entity who's name I can't remember.

I got several warnings by email from Dell, I think Hilton also, possibly Hertz as well, there is a post here somewhere which contains most of the reported big names.

Since then I've had warnings of suspicious behaviour coming out of China against my gmail account which only stopped when I changed my gmail password and have since changed all my banking and more general internet based passwords.

The amount of personal information able to be mined by unauthorized users in possession of multiple hacked database entries is huge. Whilst individual leaks might or might not provide enough information to use effectively, linking information across databases would potentially cause massive banking/cc problems as the thieves join the dots together and start testing systems for vulnerability.

How long did it take you guys for HSBC to ring in regards to your application? I applied 4 business days ago and still no call nor have they called my payroll department.

Can't use this credit card for a vodafone online recharge....(Prepaid mobile broadband internet) Website reports this card as not being a valid card

Would seem that telstra.com also has issues accepting this card, but only on the prepaid side when using the web portal, normal bill paying of postpaid accounts is not affected.....

Umm, my memory was that I was wrapped up in less than 7 days from application to getting the card. No-one rang me or my payroll department. They just sent the card along with ridiculous credit limit (way too high for a grocery/fuel card).

Interestingly, I've not dealt with HSBC in any way, in fact, you are encouraged -not- to do that. All comms has been to the everydayrewards telephone based service team.

I had some trouble with my PIN number originally and it was proving difficult to solve over the phone, I asked if I could pop into a HSBC branch to fix it up and was told no, they wouldn't be able to assist in any way in relation to this card as it was a Woolworths EDR card.

Right. Maybe it will just show up in my letterbox.

I specified a limit in the application though so they should hopefully adhere to it.

:) Heading to USA on saturday, would like it by then!

What sort of credit limits have been offered?

I got mine very quickly too, I'd say within a week of applying. Noone called my employer or asked for any payslips. I already have a HSBC credit card, which I will be cancelling, so maybe that helped.

When I called the service centre one night I was put through very quickly to someone. They answered my questions and solved my problem very efficiently. Much better than the service I used to get at HSBC credit card.

In any event, I ended up getting a high enough limit to use this for all my monthly spending without any need to top up before the due date. I don't want to say the precise number but it is just as high as my CBA card which has a good limit as I'm on wealth package and have lots of products with them.

So far this is looking like a great card. There are just too few places that take amex and all my large expenses - rates, utilities and insurance- are MC/VISA only.

Are you sure you don't want a 28 degrees card with no foreign currency conversion fee if you're heading to the USA?

The EDR Mastercard is great for spending in AUD in Australia, but 1 point per dollar is not worth a 3% overseas transaction charge - see page 1 of the fees & charges brochure: https://www.everydayrewards.com.au/...a4-7c476425f531/ERQFF049+0111.pdf?MOD=AJPERES

I want it moreso just before I leave, not really to use overseas. All my stuff I will buy over there will be reimbursed by my workplace anyway.

Still havent heard anything though :(

I've probably mentioned it before, but I have a Citibank Silver credit card with a small limit that I don't use.

When travelling I lock it in the hotel safe so I have a source of funds available to me if something was to happen to my wallet or my main credit cards within (NAB Qantas Platinum and AMEX Qantas Ultimate).

I decided to apply for the EDR CC to get the 16,000 points and cancel my Citibank card when it arrives (the Citibank card is due for the annual fee in June - $89 same as EDR).

I guess it was approved because this is now showing in my account:

It'll be interesting to see what limit I end up with. My existing combined credit limit is about 25% of my annual income (plus the mortgage of course).

Poor IT practices ?

I went to the link I had bookmarked to manage my card (https://creditcard.everydayrewards.com.au/) and received an alert from Firefox that the site should not be trusted because the certificate was self-signed.

Thinking maybe the site URL may have changed I went to the Everyday Money site and followed the links from there - same result.

Thinking next it may be my browser (I'm running a nightly build on this pc and anything is possible) I tried bog-standard Internet Explorer - again with the same result.

It is only if one tells the browser to ignore the security warnings, and proceed to the site that one gets the message
Important message for Credit Cards Online customers
Due to essential system maintenance, our Credit Cards Online service is not available from 8:00pm Saturday 21st May 2011 to 8:00am Sunday 22nd May 2011 AEST. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
So, putting up a "closed for maintenance" message which is only seen if one disregards good security practice. Hmmm.

Richard.

It turned up today. As reflected by others in the thread, the limit is along the lines of what I'd expect for a Platinum card and not an everyday shoppers card (I suppose it does say "Platinum" on the actual card though, albeit without the benefits that typically go with such a card).

Interestingly, there's no stated requirement to go into a Woolworths store and present ID/etc as others have had to do. There was also no verification of my employment or other details (unless HR didn't tell me, but in the past they've checked with me before giving anything out). This is my first account with HSBC.

Same here. No calls, no ID, nada. I got the card about 7 days after applying and off I went, after reducing the high limit first.

I had a few issues using it last year and early this one after first receiving the card.

Many systems did not recognise the 5494 prefix as being valid.

Just now my EDR card was rejected 3 times by Barclay's Bike Hire in London (on-line transaction). I used my CBA Platinum Mastercard instead -- rejected on first attempt but accepted on second.
