Hi Again,

I think I worked out a way to help me help QANTAS.

I'm just 10 status credits short of a loyalty bonus that
will put me within reach of qualifying for a free return trip
to Australia.

But I live in the U.S.
Is there a way of earning status
credits without flying?
Now I do have to fly a short trip soon,
so if I book it on American, is there any particular class I need
to book with to get the status credits?

Thanks,

Ian

Status Credits are earned on all eligible booking classes. They are based number of miles. The table can be found here.

(As per what vt01 posted ...)

In 99.999% of cases you MUST FLY to earn QFF SC's ... (don't even think about any other way) ...

As per the QFF T&C's Airline Earning Table under American Airlines® any travel in the following classes will earn a mininum of 10 SC's:

If the class is not listed, Nada!

On some flights QANTAS limit how much of the award can be
obtained from purchased points. It varies depending on which direction
your going and US to Australia is one of their cash-cows.

To get those 10 Status Credits the OP needs to travel on a paid flight that earns points (and hence SC's) in the Qantas Frequent flyer program. ...

It's not points the OP requires, it's 10 Status Credits. To get these the OP needs to travel on a paid flight that earns points (and hence SC's) in the Qantas Frequent flyer program. ...

My reading is that the OP needs the 10 Status Credits in order to get the next 5,000 loyalty point bonus. Purchasing the 5,000 points is potentially another way to achieve this.

That was the way i read it, because status credit don't get you flights as such, points do.

Right. I need points, but I can't purchase them since in the
U.S. QANTAS are quite strict about what proportion of an award
can be purchased.

Where are you based in the US? We migth be able to suggest a simple mileage run...

   oops.. my bad ... too much singha perhaps ...

'tis AUD182.50 to buy 5K QFF points (possibly less in the US if can be done GST free) but that can be no more than 15% of the points required for the award. So the award points cost can not be less than 33,333.

Look for one of those American Airlines Net SAAver Fares or similar.

For example, I have found over a weekend in late March a return fare for USD128 (DFW-AUS-DFW)
The two flights book into S & N class; both earn as discount WHY on QF, so that's 20SCs and an additional 1000 QFF points as well with the 500 minimum point guarantee for travel on AA.

Colour me confused - if the bought points can be no more than 15% of the award points cost - wouldnt it be a minimum 33,333 rather than 3,333 points for the award? Given that the award sought is US-Oz as a baseline that is going to be way way over 33K points isnt it?

I mileage run might be more effective as you point out. It might also get the OP close to level for teh next elite tier at QFF?

LAX-MEL return is 96,000 points.

I am sorry if I have missed something here but doesn't that mean you can purchase 14,400 points from QF website? And since you only require 5,000 points....

Ok, it should be fine to purchase the 5,000pts with that trip in mind.

Anyway, as posted, a quick return trip on AA crediting to QFF will do the trick (avoid NetSavers as they normally book in to Q class).

May be he needs 19K for the flight and can only purchase 14.4K hence the requirement for the 10SC for the loyalty bonus. As long the the flight to gain the 10SC is not too expensive then just go for it.

So if you did buy points it would be much less than the 15% max.

This rule does not apply in the U.S. It's much more tougher than this
hence why I need the loyalty bonus.

Have you got the specific rules? Per this link it doesnt distibguish between Oz and non-Oz.

Unfortunately not, which is most annoying. I already have purchased
5000 points and it will not let me make the award. I called up QANTAS
U.S. and they explained it was due to "not enough earned" points even
though its well above 85% which is why I need to earn the remaining
points. I think its a route by route rule. LAX-SYD/MEL is a very popular
route for QF so I can see why they don't want to give seats away
without a fight!

Anyway, thanks for your help. I'm going to try to get a AA flight
that gives me the loyalty bonus.

Regards.
