Drive-By Pick-Up Penalty at Sydney International

Then if they do fine you, They will be allowed to get your details from the Govt dept, so they may send you a fine.

Why under these circumsatances should the governmnet department ( RTA etc ) be allowed to breach your privacy to a private company?
Some sort of sweatheart deal done with the Govt no doubt ??

If i rung the RTA up to ask the owners details for a vehicle based on a rego number,, i doubt i would get anything from them !
I don't know the details of the process. Do you know for a fact that the TRA is providing the personal details of the registered owner of the vehicle to Sydney Airport? Or is the infringement notice processed and sent by the RTA?

To whom is the fine payable? Is it paid to Sydney Airport or its owners, or is it paid to a government department? If the latter, is some of the fine proceeds actually forwarded to Sydney Airport Corp or do the proceeds remain with the Government?

I don't know the answers to these points and until I do understand them, I cannot make claims about breaches of teh privacy act or money grabbing by the airport.

Somewhere in legislation, yes somewhere amongst the thousands of pieces of law we have, that allows the RTA to release registration information to SYDMacAirport and vice versa, so that any infringements can be suitably sent to the infringing motor vehicle owner. Again there are laws which give authority to private SYDMacAirport parking clowns to issue infringments occuring on intra-airport property & roadways. Vehicle details sent to RTA for action.

There is some financial gain for the RTA / State Governement where they would receive some part of those fines issued. Thus the collections are handled by the State Debt Recovery Office.

This type of partnership also exists for many other agencies such as councils, where councils now employ parking rangers who have authority to issue parking infringement fines for example, the council and state govt share in the infringment money pot. The councils make extra $$$ and the State govt can boast of having more police officers on the beat catching real criminals rather than issuing fines for those overstaying 2minutes.

Ok

Thanks for the information of HOW it happens,

BUT
Do we think this is fair??? Why should a large Corp get away with this sort of thing?

As I see it NO, and the only way to change that would be to boycott the airport (like that will happen, as it’s a major hub) or complain to the Govt (Federal, State, Local) that allows this to happen. Not sure that would change much either, but I feel we should voice our opinions, as we are allowed to doing, living in this great Democracy!

Is it fair? No its a monopoly. But what are they getting away with. They're just working with in the law of the land. Sure it s*cks, but they are only exercising they legal rights as "land owners". Should you be able to get away with the same thing if someone started parking on your land against your wishes?

If I were to, say, widen my drive-way so that it encompassed the whole of my street-front and then hire a wheel-clamper when anyone parked along it would that be fair?

Plenty of international airports manage to provide pick-up and drop-off zones at airports. They are usually not in the prime position (reserved for taxis/buses/etc as they should be) but are accessible enough.

Mac bank has deliberately designed the airport so that it is impossible to pick-up passengers without paying for parking. I for one find that to be the dark side of capitalism and believe it needs to be opposed. I would be willing to take part in peaceful protest to inconvenience Mac Bank in this regard. For example you could get 1000 people to drop-off a "passenger" at peak hour, taking the maximum allowable time to do so. Then go around the block and do it again. The airlines might put some pressure on Mac Bank if their planes start getting delayed by late passengers, though it would be nicer if only Mac Bank suffered. How to do this is the question.

Something similar was done when Melbourne tried to change the bike parking laws. It worked.

What besides the fact that you don't own your driveway?

I'm absolutely not defending those evil b*stards at Macbank. Personally, I'm hoping they go bust.

But rightly or wrongly its their airport and they get to run it however, they like. If you don't like it, well in this case you have to lump it. Or maybe get stuck into those idiots who oppose a second airport for Sydney. Or do your protest, I'll help if I'm in sydney

I do this at Melbourne - I will have to be more careful.
A better question is is there a spot if you have a disabled sticker for 86 yo war veterans who are also amputees?

A second aspect concerns stopping. If the car was rolling ever so slowly - that's not stopping - they hit you like this at a Give Way sign, for not actually braking to a complete stationary stop. And if any clown gets injured jumping in/out a rolling car, sue them.

On the definition of pickup, I am not a lawyer. I know what a pickup is in St Kilda or Kings Cross, but your children! Actually I may really be dropping them off at the ex's.

Under Law of Equity - although run roughshod over, the reasonableness of the distinction is questionable. However I don't believe NSW has any equity.:D

No Pickups. If more than 2 pax, drop one off, pick up the others at the same time, then loop, and do a non-stationary pickup.

Stopping is allowed for certain safety or legal reasons - medical or accident or flat tyre. To save seven bucks, stopping to check an under inflated or flat sounds plausible to me. I suppose a collision is also good enough.

Surely, you mean a stop sign. You don't actually have to stop at a give way sign, unless of course you have to give way.

On this line of thought, how about trying a car jacking. "Honest, I stopped the car to answer the mobile phone and this person just came up, put their bags in the car and demanded that I drive them somewhere"

Stopping to answer a mobile phone wouldn't be an excuse to stop anyway.

The rules at the airport are that pickups are allowed at the designated spots on the lower level(at domestic) and drop offs at the upper level ; the person flouted the rules and got fined; you break the rules, can hardly complain if get hit with the penalty imo

Gamble $139 to save $7

I think I'm going to drive down to the terminal tomorrow night just to see how many picking up spots actually exists. I bet there is like two spots at most. If someone knows the right spots and where they are, please let me know, as it will save me the drive there for curiosity sake.

There's none, that's the point. About 18 months back macairports "closed" the free pickup area so that everyone picking someone up from T1 had to pay parking. To ensure they didn't lose revenue they made sure the legal framework and a million cameraboys were in place to fine anyone who tried to dodge the parking fee by picking up in the drop off area. It caused a huge fuss at the time, was mainstream news and there have been a number of threads here discussing ways to avoid the parking fee (eg picking people up from the rental car drop off area). Maybe since the fuss has died down so a lot of people have forgotten but these fines are very well known.

Or short version, I wouldn't recommend driving down tomorrow night as to drive past the pickup area you'll not find any pickup spots and be charged $7 for your trouble.

There are no official "Pick-up" zones at T1 unless you pay $7 for 1/2 an hour in the car park.

If people are willing to walk 5-10 minutes there are a number of spots where one can be picked up without breaking the rules. I would rather do this than give Macquarie Bank money for parking....

Excepted that it is illegal to drive while talking on a phone. Hence I stopped because I didn't want to break the law and be a menace to other traffic or cause an accident. Where's the natural justice in Macbank trying to fine me for preventing an accident. ;)

I'd certainly take that to court.

It is not illegal to not answer an incoming call. You should ignore the call until you are in a position to stop safely in a place where stopping is permitted. No incoming telephone call is important enough to justify stopping in a no stopping zone. I don't care if the call is from the prime minister, the president of the USA, or the hospital where Mrs medhead is about to give birth - the call can wait. And I expect a judge would agree with my point of view here.

This gets to the crux of the whole isssue - there is nowhere one can stop to pick up arriving passengers at T1 (as opposed to T2 amd T3) due to Macquarie's greed! You have to park in the car park and be gourged...I would love to know about JohnK's secret pick up points!

note to self: use smilies more often to indicate attempts at humour.

However, the no stopping sign is clearly not there because it is unsafe to stop. It must be safe to stop, since they allow people to stop to drop off. Therefore, if someone was to choose to answer their phone it would be safe for them to stop in the drop off zone. As for the importance of phone calls - how do you value your points? According to your own standard?

At the end of the day there are choices .... just more expensive (such as driving to NTL or CBR flying out of there to an onward intl connection in MEL/BNE) or flying out of T2/3 to MEL/BNE and getting intl connections from there .......

But $7/30mins seems rather steep. I hope the MEL crowd don't catch on. $3/20 mins is reasonable, once it goes over that $5 barrier in my mind it moves from reasonable to gouging. That is probably the difference between MacAirport and MEL - the former get their growth through gouging the latter are trying to drive growth through increasing passenger numbers (ala TT, AirAsia) and bulldozing even more land for car parking.... and couple that with more moderated gouging.

Last time I flew back from overseas I had a pleasant experience when I asked my daughter to pick me up in the carpark at T1 in Sydney.

I was waiting by the new multi-storey car park, my daughter drove into the car park, stopped to pick me up and drove straight to the exit. As we hadn't bothered to pay for the parking ticket at one of the pay-machines, we drove to one of the manned booths. My daughter gave the guy the ticket, he took one look at it and waved us through without charge.

I wonder if others have had this experience?
