Does Closing Beaches Make Any Sense?

In my neck of the woods it was clear the whole thing was a "joke" until nightclubs and pubs were closed

It won't be a joke when Joe Public realises how many preventable deaths are going to occur here in Oz. By then, Mr Public will want a time machine to take it all back.

Unfortunately those with their head in the sand will blame everyone but themselves and say "why didn't someone tell us".

Can't entirely blame Joe Public for being confused.

Make sure you go to the footy and to the shops, and 'only essential workers should leave home, and everybody with a job is essential,' are but two of many examples...

That message has well passed - yes, the public can be blamed for being idiots.

The "Mr Joe public" is really the youngest generations in this case. I do not thnk they will react to COVID in the same way they got on board the whole Climate Change thing - as COVID is no fun and actually restricts their day to day enjoyments immediately.

I really truly think that the average "young person" these days would have no idea of what the concept of a "preventable death" is. They have been so very sheltered...

Take a look at BBC - 832 Spanish dead whilst you were sun-baking today, many more when you finally wake up from an ignorant sleep!

I'm going to have to agree and disagree. Yes what you say is true but it's not only them.

Idiocy covers a broad spectrum of demographics.

Maybe the news getting out over coming days that the UK is converting airport buildings into a 12,000 body morgue and NYC is commandeering refrigerated semitrailers for temporary morgues will wake up a few more people out of their stupor.

Edit: and NYC is looking for 40,000 additional medical staff in the next 2 weeks.

Disagree that it's mostly young people.

It's primarily wealth and entitlement - why else do you see the highest community transmission in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney? And Lombardy? And Madrid? And New York? And those Australians in Aspen? And those stupid doctors who wouldn't self isolate after arriving home this evening?

Travellers bring it back, but it's the blatant disregard for public health advice across the lifespan, which we have seen in the wealthy and entitled, that is almost entirely responsible for the initial community transmission.

That, I agree with.

Lot of generalising on young people. A minority are out doing the wrong thing. The majority ARE doing the right thing.

Also for all those still defending going to the beach, amongst the many reasons not to do it is that you are meant to be avoiding ALL unnecessary trips.

If you want to exercise you do it locally where you live, all the while practising social distancing. You do not drive or take public transport to go to a beach. If you cannot exercise by walking out your door without having to make a trip, then you do not partake. Virtually everyone will have a street or path at their doorstep that they can use for a walk though.

Stay at home should be a very simple concept to understand.

A week can be a long time.

I wonder how many of the ~1000 people at Bondi last weekend, spent this weekend signing up on MyGov, or queuing at Centrelink? Might have just got pretty bloody real?

Dear Renato,
You're right. It was clearly a media beat up by those fake news outlets. People know what's best for themselves.
The leftists and government are out to take away your freedom.
Everything on Fox News is fair and balanced. Andrew Bolt is a sage.
So, keep your tin foil hat on: THEY really are out to get you!

🙄

After spending all weekend seeing articles of people hyperventilating about irresponsible people at Bondi Beach - with accompanying photos clearly showing most people spaced well apart - as well as numerous Facebook reposts of articles, well, it just didn't make sense logically.

Given the choice of the safest thing to do between going to the beach or going into a train/aeroplane which is the safest?
I'd have picked the beach.

But then I came across this article about lessons from the Spanish flu where, if applicable to the Coronavirus, given the choice of the safest thing to do between going to the beach and staying cooped up inside one's house - the answer would unambiguously be going to the beach (since mortality rates dropped from 40% to 13% by using sun and fresh air).

Which then raises the question of whether governments are acting irresponsibly by closing down beaches.
Regards,
Renato
Fresh air may have some generally benefical health effects but it has no disinfectant properties whatsoever.

The disinfectant component of UV light is UV-C - AKA hard UV.
The UV-C from the sun is completely absorbed by the ozone layer and atmosphere.
None of it reaches sunbakers at Bondi.
You would need a UV-C generating appliance to kill the virus with hard UV radiation.

Now on to the real question.
Does Putin pay you in roubles?

Spanish Flu.. AVOID CROWDS

And yes taking troops and sailors out of crowded and confined barracks for beds outside spaced further apart combined with better hygiene and other health measures that well organised field hospitals would have improved the outcomes. But fresh air and sunshine actually killing the influenza by being a disinfectant of what was inside a body? No.

And as tuberculosis was very common too back then and aerosol transmission is the problem with TB not having TB patients in confined rooms would be good.

Eastern Suburbs of Sydney also contains many Backpacker hostels and doubt many of these are wealthy, maybe entitlement.

Went for a 3km walk this morning along Carrum beach.

The following signs have been placed since I was there last.

There were very few people about- mainly walking dogs.

While I appreciate Renato1's point that things are being soilt by fools, this is one case where proximity to fools may be infectious so I for one try to avoid anywhere I might find them. While in normal circumstance I might agree this is over the top, there seems to be a pattern here that over the top policing works best and I think we should be doing the same.

Straw Man argument - where you assign to me things I didn't say, then go sarcistic and mocking about what I never said.

In a reasoned response, you'd quote specifically what I said, then attempt to point out the inaccuracy.

Thus I conclude - you have nothing to say.

So - I've linked to an article with unambiguous results relating to the outcomes of keeping infected people inside verus outside, and you apparently are saying it isn't so.

And its an undisputed fact from observation that seasonal flu and all those other viruses die out when the weather gets warmer and sunnier - and your argument would say that isn't so either.

Also, I note that the UV light that does get through our atmosphere can burn the skin of fair skinned people in 20 to 30 minutes. By your analysis then, any corona or flu virus would be totally unaffected and thrive in such sunlight and say 27C heat, rather than being zapped.

And, from your final comment, you assert that you believe in nutty conspiracy theories.

Enough said,
Regards,
Renato
