Well said, no offence to oz_mark, but as with a bank, the points (or deposits held) are a liability to them and should be reported as such in their accounts, entities can't just exempt themselves of liability because the earner passed away.

I don't know the exact accounting treatment, but I would fully expect that there would be an allowance made for points that would never be used (expired due to 3 years inactivity, death of a member etc.)

Question is, why tell Qantas and then try to claim them?

If you have no clue how to access the persons account, that would be the most probably reason. You have to ask Qantas for access, and I'm sure they'd want to know reasons. But I guess at that time you could say something like "I'm they're PA and need access?" would QF accept that?

Even if you don't know the password all you have to do is make sure the same gender rings Qantas to enquire and have correct name, birthdate and address of deceased and they will issue new password.

Of course your beneficiaries would also need to make sure that they transferred all of the points warehoused with Amex or Diners into the QFF account. I can't imagine that either of those two organisations would keep the points alive.

While those on this board seem to wish it were otherwise, most Loyalty club points as far as I can tell, generally are expired on the death of a member. And I know you can point at exceptions.

Some years ago my best friend passed away with 200000+ points which I discovered when settling his affairs. I did not have his pin so I waited three months, wrote to them as him saying I had forgotten and they issued me with a new one which I used for his wife to visit her family in Queensland by phone bookings. I even topped up the account to get enough points for the last flight. Four years after his death I informed them he had passed away and to close the account. I have no moral qualms about my actions and would do it again.

Ok, so that was my delima. I was in NZ trying to help my friend organise a funeral as well as sort out her husbands affairs.
I was given an envelope full of cards/accounts to cancel and a very short time frame. I am now much more aware of what I should have done and hope that this forum has made other FF members also more aware.
Not saying I agree with the Qantas rules at all - just that I now understand.
Thanks for all the input

Kerry,

All of us this board learn from our own mistakes or someonelse who is kind enough to shares theirs with us. This is how the board has continued to offer so much good information. Thankyou for sharing your troubles, as it has probably made alot of people (including me) who read this board make arrangements so they do not suffer the same fate.
