Just thought I’d start this thread as I am getting into the practice of buying expensive wine for cheap flights on Qantas Wine. Consequently between this and my stays at various Accor properties I am starting to build up a stockpile. One far larger than a bachelor or couple could consume (especially when we’re talking about 20 bottles of the same thing)

Hence, I thought I’d check with fellow points collectors how they handle the build up of wine? Do you just bring a bottle to every gathering you attend? What strategies could help one deal with the excesses of wine accumulated over these point hauls?

Christmas gifts or send them here….

Assuming they’re not plonk….

I may "send" a couple over if there is interest (and supposing it doesn't cost me a dime to do so)
Assuming they’re not plonk….
When we're dealing with QF Wine chances are good they may be plonk.

Not sure the freebies from Accor are up to cellaring...
I hear if you cellar Accor wines long enough, an ibis will fly out of the bottle when you open the bottle!

I’m not so sure about the don’t go off line, there is a peak drinking period and past that peak the wine definitely starts to decline. I once had ~70 dozen, now down to about 40 precisely for this reason.

Much of what you describe was covered here:

You should find plenty of answer in that thread.

Agree, i find 4 years is perfect. But i always drink the new ones first :( Either way we have to remember the money is in the flights and not in the wine

Unfortunately im in the same boat as the op i have about 300 bottles of wine coming from $5k worth of wine per year to net my 350k points. The problem is i gave up alcohol cold turkey. I dont mind the amount i have because i can just gift them and they all have their place in my house however in July im going to need to earn 350k points again for my year flights.

I need to find someone who will say, take the wine and i take the points and split the cost to a fair degree. Technically legal as the wine will be shipped to them. Has anyone thought about this or shamelessly be interested in this?

The problem for you is a lot of the wine is worth less then half price, so you might find it hard someone to split it "fairly" down the middle.

One strategy a colleague and I who are in the same boat as you are trying now is consigning our wine to an auction house and having it sold that way. For instance Langtons lets you drop off your cases of wine at select Dan Murphy’s stores for pick up:

The wine hasn’t been listed yet but will let everyone know once the wine is sold.

Happy to take the wine and consider paying a nominal amount for it, but it wouldn't be anywhere near half price and it would depend on the wine purchased.

This indeed.

I have tried this last year and had moderate success, but have recently noticed that Langtons has become saturated with Qantas Wine stock, so prices have been coming down. After fees, it hardly became worth the time, unless you aren't purchasing the cheapest cost per point wine.

Is the money you get back more or less than the TRS refund of 23.59%? I suspect some might be interested in buying cases of Qantas wine prior to travelling abroad to collect the TRS
