Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Controversial take - but despite having had fancy hard to clean/easy to break top of the line Riedel and Waterford crystal glasses before, I actually love the weight, rim and general suitability of the Krosno Harmony glasses. Feels good enough to have something expensive in, wide enough bowl for something that needs a lot of oxygen, but also totally fine to put a $12 white alongside vietnamese takeaway with mates without worrying about it.
I think that's great. I have the Krosno Avant-Garde glasses for my everyday drinkers, but when I open up a good one I have 2 x zalto denk’art universal glasses. I must say i do notice a big difference when using those glasses compared to a normal glass. Mind you, the Zalto glasses can make cheaper wines taste worse though.

I had two of the Riedel Vitis (now called manufaktr vitis) Syrah glasses and I thought they were super fancy and looked amazing but it has a really fine area at the bottom of the bowl which was almost impossible to clean perfectly, and the thin stem always worried me. Inevitably one day i made the classic error of holding the base while drying the glass and it snapped off like a delicate twig. In the end, as nice as they were, i drank out of them rarely for fear, and practicality usually wins out. I do still have one of them somewhere, and the pair of waterfords, and maybe if I open up something worth north of $100 soon ill crack them out.

The story with these slopey topped glasses - about 500mtrs from Renaissance Beijing Capital Hotel which is where I have stayed every visit to Beijing for last 15 years was 'Aussie Wine Bar' - a small wine bar operated by an expat Gold Coastian guy named John.

I would go there at least 1 night every visit to BJ coz he served ice cold VBs and Penfolds wines and not the Chinese cough. One night there I saw these Chinese girls buying wine in these slopey topped glasses - I asked John what is the deal with these - he said his Chinese wife bought them on Taobao as a joke but when customers saw them they ALL wanted to try them - expats and locals.

Within a week or 2 they were the only glasses anybody wanted to drink out of - there are distinct shapes for Champs / whites / reds I tried for novelty then just had to buy some - now even our guests at home love to drink out of them. I had another doz of each type arrive in last container as an Italian Restaurant in Chelsea wanted them to use - they cost A$2.50ea.

Tip - drink out of high side so you don't wear half of the wine. 👍
