Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I appreciate this is probably more observation than complaint. The problem is, no matter how good the deal, it can't hurt to throw an extra 2% cashback on top to make it even sweeter. Consequently most will mention cashback to demonstrate the lowest possible price.

If you don't trust cashback sites - who could blame you - don't use them; I personally like it when someone else does all the leg-work to determine how to best stack deals to get to the lowest price.

In truth, as long as I've been here, It's been that way. Most will remember the crazy stacks achieved by buying gift cards, getting six bottle discounts, using coupon codes and applying cashback (e.g. Cellarmasters).
I don't think he was referring to this scenario, as of course you'll reference other ways to get a price lower on a particular deal. I think what he's referring to are the constant "<insert cashback %> at <insert store> today" and that being the extent of the post.

VC have a member offer on Wynns BL CS 2018 $28
Also a 100/10, 200/25, 300/40 Spend & Save with VIP100, VIP200 etc
Looks like 20% on Cheddar too

Edit: snap!

such posts are usually followed by "anything worthwhile there" posts which leads to posts about wine deals. There are a couple of specific exclusions but I don't think I'd buy wine unless it can be stacked with a cashback or, even better, with an Amex offer on top.

Wynns Black Label 2018 @ VCs on member offer $28

They have "spend and save" VIP40 code for over $300 that brings a dozen to just under $25 (my personal buy trigger) per bottle (and no hassle with cashback apps)

Cheddar still has 20%
So I'm contemplating a 6 pack that would come down to $22.40 a bottle, but already have 10 of the '18 vintage...

Correspondence from cheddar suggests coupon codes and cashback not available for VC deal.

Cheers

Cashback ineligible on Penfolds and Dom Perignon which wasn't an exclusion previously!

Also 2019 Wynns BL is at $28 which is supposedly even a better year than 2018.

It certainly is - plenty at port Melbourne VIC and available for delivery. Yes the '19 has slightly higher critic reviews, both are excellent and will age well IMO. Both good years for whole of coonawarra. Different vintage so depends is you prefer big and bold or more elegant. Or how much of each you already have!

Yes that does seem to be a recent addition. Other member offers worth a look at VC before CB / spend and save
Rieslingfreak no 4 @ $ 20
Yalumba Menzies @ 54 (2016)
Fraser Gallop Parterre CS @ 42 ('18)

To be honest, it's a bit of both

I used to post a bit more with deals etc, but it does feel like they're few and far between these days. Pre-covid and at the start of covid it felt like there was a lot more - e.g. the BWS clearance stuff, back when my wine guy was a thing etc.

Similarly, these days the ratio of deals/wine thoughts to cashback/etc posts has shifted quite a bit. Of course, today is proving that wrong (!) but in general over the last few months. I think redbigot did it well by separating the cashback posts into a separate thread on his forums

anyway, as you can see there's a lot of folks who like the cashback posts in this thread so i'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but i do wonder if there are others such as myself who have lost engagement a bit 🤷‍♂️

Agreed - 2019 better now, but over time I think the difference will reduce. Have a couple of cases of 2018 in the cellar, and $25 is also my buy point. It's been possible to get at $22-23 in the past, but not for a while

Seriously?

Thats a fair saving? What is it?

Found it - Yaldara 1847 First Pick Barossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Anybody tried it?
And this just in from The Wine Collective:

Now TBH - I did buy a doz from Kemeneys last week - tested 1 out on 2 guinea pigs at The Olive Tree on Wed nt - great nose but just doesn't dance on the tongue - it only had 30mins or so in decanter but it had zero wow factor and I am far from convinced it would improve much more - I am sending balance 11 botts back for refund.
