$24.95 definitely not DM regular price for current release Wynns. Regular price is closer to $30. It can be had for around the $20 mark if you look out for it and stack some discounts. And earlier this year for much less than $20.

$24.95 for the Wolf Blass is OK. But again, anyone who regulary follows this thread would know, that a sub $20 price is possible.

Got this email from Wine Companion. Can't believe the rrp of Penfolds these days, esp Bin 28 and 128 (in fact all of them really). The strategic move into Chinese market must be gold.

By now, Australian wine lovers would have scoured the Penfolds Collection in a flurry of excitement.

While the pinnacle wine from the line-up, Penfolds Grange, will have received its fair share of attention, here at Halliday Wine Companion, we went in search of some other worthwhile investments from the list.

If you love the luscious style of Penfolds reds like Grange, but don’t love the premium price tag, consider alternatives such as the RWT Shiraz ($200). If you’re after a bargain, scoop up the Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz ($60) and the Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz ($50). James describes the Bin 128 as having impeccable balance and length, making it a good one to layaway, while the Bin 28, with its mouth-watering array of flavours, might be hard to resist right now.

If you like lighter red wines, try the Bin 23 Pinot Noir, which James says is the best rendition Penfolds has released yet.

A less discussed subject when it comes to the much-loved South Australian brand is its superb range of white wines. At the top of those ranks is the highly awarded Reserve Bin A Chardonnay ($125), which James says is ‘chiselled like a marble Roman statue’. At more than half that cost is the Bin 311 Chardonnay ($50), which also gets a glowing review. It’s the right time for riesling, too, and the Bin 51 ($40) ticks all the boxes for refreshing drinking.
 
Really not sure why people buy Penfolds anymore, there are so many good wine producers at 1/2 their price for the informed, and assume people are here because they want to be informed.

Their name and their heritage.

I'd have no hesitation buying at the right price. In my view BIN 28, for example, is good value at $20 to $25. It's at least 5 years since I've seen it near that price.

Fortunately I have a lot of Penfolds in the cellar purchased at realistic levels over the past 20 years. It will be a sad day when that is all gone as I don't ever think I'll see realistic Penfolds prices again.

Well yes, yes, yes and yes. I have no problems with the wine per se, like you have bought plenty over the years and would buy again at the right price but like you its been at least 5 years since I have seen that right price.

As for name and heritage, thats not my reason for drinking wine, I actually like the flavour/taste/aroma's/relative quality of a good wine and also look for the VFM factor. Maybe if you are trying to impress someone (though clearly someone who doesn't know that much about wine themselves and would be impressed by that name/heritage more than the actual quality and value).

I don't and I have sold off most of what I had.
Penfolds used to be a staple in my cellar for decades, but increasing prices over the last 10 years or so to chase shareholder returns with no real increase in quality led me to change to buying from other, smaller wineries that manage to make wines just as good or better at prices I can afford.

Are there plenty equivalent quality wines from other produces? Prolly - you like blondes - I like brindles!

Had guests for a drink tonight - opened a 389 then a St Henri - girls & gals giggled and gurgled with glee - would they have displayed similar response had they experienced wines from ‘Who Flung Dung Winery’? Maybe - maybe not?

Precisely, my personal assessment of QPR excludes many wines from a number of wineries I used to buy in years gone by.

But if the "Who Flung Dung Winery" was an attempt at humour it could be interpreted as ignorant/elitist.

I actually think you wont find too many equivalents. How many other other quality wines are made being able to source grapes from such a wide variety of growers/regions and use American oak.

Eg, people often suggest HoG might be a equivalent to Grange. Other then price, they're totally different beasts. One is 100% single vineyard shiraz. The other a blend that changes year to year, grapes sourced from various regions and a big whack of American oak.

I prefer Alternative (and affordable to me) rather than Equivalent.

Grange replaced by the likes of Standish, Kalleske, Wild Duck Creek
Bin 707 replaced by various Margaret River Cabernets
St. Henri replaced by Sons of Eden, Spinifex, Trevor Jones Sorciere Sauvage, Yangarra Ironheart, Wirra Wirra RSW
Bin 389 no direct alternative for me, I don't buy Yalumba Signature either due to cork aversion, maybe Wolf Blass Grey Label Cabernet Shiraz.
Bin 407 I've never liked this line, many other Cabernets I prefer, mostly from WA
Bin 128 not usually my style either, heaps of alternatives
Bin 28 heaps, Kalleske Greenock, Dutschke, Gibsons, Tim Smith, Head Wines, John Duval, Langmeil Orphan Bank, anything from Marius, Mr Riggs, Olivers Taranga, St Hallett Blackwell, Teusner Albert, Turkey Flat

Great list, Penfolds make nice wines, but their 'house style' gets a bit boring after a while. I do still enjoy them, but as I progress through my wine drinking journey, there are much better places to spend my $$ for both value and interest reasons.

But neither of those exactly match the 14.5% a/v, although they are the only two in the price range with 94pt reviews from CM on TWF.

Maybe a failed export order as I have never seen TF under cork locally? I don't see the Michael Hall on Dan's website. I don't mind taking a punt, as I was on the lookout for some Barossa Shiraz anyway. But if it was confirmed as TF, I would love to get some friends onto it.
