It was exactly seven years ago today that we first flicked the switch on
crackawines.com.au.
To celebrate our 7th birthday I've tasked the wine buying team with finding something close to my heart. As a proud, committed Pinotphile, my request was simple - a superb Pinot Noir for less than $20.
And with the
2014 Sharmans Tasmanian Pinot Noir, they've delivered something exceptional.
The Sharmans Vineyard is one of the oldest in Relbia, part of Tasmania's Tamar Valley. Setup by Mike & Philippa Sharman in 1986, Sharmans was the pioneer of the area, proving the naysayers (who thought Relbia too cold) wrong in the process. The wines themselves are made just up the road by Jeremy Dineen at
Josef Chromy.
Here, we see the best of what this part of Tassie can do as well, with an unmatched opulence that is incredibly impressive for Tassie Pinot.
Hand-picked, wild fermented (with 25% whole bunches) and matured for 12 months in French oak, this is a wine of rare concentration and power - a Shiraz drinkers Pinot, but with a cool Tassie edge.
James Halliday certainly appreciated the intensity, praising the '
excellent hue and depth', noting how the '
voluminous cherry/plum bouquet is replicated on the voluptuous palate' which is '
full to the brim with Pinot fruit, persistent fine tannins and quality French oak'.
James gave it
95 points and finishes off calling it a '
thunderous answer to Central Otago's biggest and best'.
Personally, I just think this is a cracking Pinot Noir - one that is the perfect present for Cracka's 7th birthday. What's even more impressive is that you'll pay $35/bottle for a bottle at the Sharmans cellar door, but today it's all yours for
just $19.99/bottle in six packs.
