Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Couldn't help myself last night and cleared the last of the Bollinger La Grande Annee out of a BWS. 4 bottles at $148/bottle with 2 x Hardys HRB Cab Sauv at $24/bottle to make up the 6.

I was told by the manager that they are being more selective on where they are stocking the high end products now, and once these are cleared out from the stores that are not tagged to sell it moving forward, they won't be restocking, hence my decision to buy it all.

NO!!! one of the best parts of living in a poor area is the high clearance rate on all fine wines that nobody but me drinks.

My experience of living in a poor area is sadly the opposite - no fine wine anywhere to be seen locally - let alone on clearance.

The finest (for want of a better word) I've seen available at the BWS in my area is Bin 389 at $120/b o_O

Your area is obviously much more affluent than you think then ;)

your definition of fine wine is probably slightly different to mine. My area is a mix of upper-middle and low class people - however it is just a community thing to really just drink beer and spirits. My Dan murphy's doesn't get this - The best part is that Dan's acts as my cellar - often finding wines aged 5-10 years at normal price. For instance when using one of the Vintage cellar dockets for a price match on the Yalumba Octavius i got a 2012.

I was just thinking of the recent posts with MM Quintet, WB platinum & black, Bolinger LGA, Leeuwin Art Chard etc, to name a few, picked up on clearance - my local bricks and mortar bottle shops wouldn't even know what they were - the closest DM is 150k's away

Bugger Steady - that is unlucky - I am sure you are living in a lovely place though.

LOL same here!
I'm sorry guys. We should stop going on about horribly discounted fine wines that can't be had online. It is a bit crass. And a bit mean if others on the forum simply can't get them. ... perhaps it's a good thing that the eofy covid discount frenzy seems to be over.

(But I would like to know, just super super quietly, if anyone spots any bargains thanks all!)

Let me know you think. I have some sleeping ...

re: 2016 Sorby Adams “The Thing” Shiraz
Really enjoyed (enjoying as we speak). Decanted for 3 hours, although had a couple of sips in between and it was interesting to note how much it opened up.

I’m not great at describing wine in terms of its “features”, but it’s full bodied yet quite smooth, and classy/refined, especially given it’s only a 2016.

Wouldn’t pay $150 for it. Think at $50-$70 it’s a decent deal. Will be keen to see how it tastes tomorrow night (assuming there’s some left).

One thing I am noticing is the length. It really lingers and I’m not complaining :)

Final note - it comes under cork covered in wax. I’ve never encountered a bottle like this. After watching some you tube vids I attempted to drill straight through the wax after heating the top of the bottle in my palm, and almost ruined the bottle attempting to open it this way.

Would advise picking the wax off to get clear visibility of the full cork (prudent advice i was able to give to the rest of the family before they attempted to open theirs).

No need to go through all that. Similar to how you would use a blade to cut the foil, this time angle it to just take off the edge of the rim, so exposing a glass circle. Then you can screw through the wax and cork, and it should both come off neatly together.

Really glad to find someone else enjoying this wine 👍

Did anyone else from VIC receive a $20 voucher from the Wine Collective this morning via points? I'm struggling to get to use this at Checkout.
Wondering if anyone else received this and has used it?

It's still the least messy and easiest way. Although I've never heard of warming the wax. Keeping the wax cool actually helps it just break off easily. Best done with a double hinged cork screw though

+1 on the double hinged corkscrew @Daver6. I bought a bottle of Company Wine Nebbiolo (Beechworth and highly recommend) from my local BS and they suggested just going straight through the wax with the corkscrew. Worked an absolute treat! Would not have worked however on a bottle of Vinteloper Riesling, which uses that glass stopper closure... luckily I just took to the wax with the foil cutter!
