Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Red Bigot - I was going to buy this secret selection until I saw your review, would be interesting to know if anyone else has bought it.

What is *really* interesting is that Dan's panel give the secret selection a higher score than the labeled wine - otherwise the description is exactly the same!

Reputedly adding a small amount of Muscat makes this a much more interesting wine.

I ordered 8 - have since drunk 2
It's definitely very dry - but I prefer dry over sweet and was expecting that from the tasting notes.
I'm happy with it - and am hanging on to the other 6

I wouldn't buy it over Rockford black by any means but it's worth the secret selection price point

I too have purchased and found lacking. The dry style just doesn't lend itself well to a sparkling wine imo. Have one left and will probably bring it out at the end of a big night.

They only offer current members ability to invite every now and then. Not happening currently. Price often drops to this, and they had it with bonus bottle (different wine) few months ago. RRP is hilarious.

Looks like Dandelion Red Queen of the Eden off the top of my head

I thought that too for a bit, but I think it got an 83 at the Decanter World Wine Awards (which I assume is the preeminent wine competition in which the wine won a platinum trophy), and it's hardly a 'household name'. Looks like the scores don't align.

I thought the Platinum was from the 2017 Sommelier awards.. And agreed, hardly an icon, but we're talking about MWG here :)

AH sorry saw the other Platinum. It matches the Platinum I mentioned as well as wine companion. Not sure on the others after I lost interest!

Tend to agree, seems to have the same wording in HH review "A lush, super-ripe, almost slightly syrupy wine, with excellent concentration. A powerful shiraz with marvellously supple texture and a lavish sweet-fruit core"

and Best Shiraz Sommelier Challenge International Wine & Spirits Competition

Platinum trophy from both

Yup, Robert Parker review lines up too.

I've always thought MWG was above this kind of histrionics, oh well, live and learn.

Sadly not.. I see it most in their RRPs which always seem to be higher than usual. E.g. Clonakilla oriada at RRP $40? Hrmm don't think so

Thank you.

I finally got on the WISH & CR bandwagon (thanks to others for the relentless advice on this too) and got some Champagne for the parents. I think I'll have a bottle or two as commission :D.

DM notes on the new release are wrong re dosage with old fortified.
The info about zero-dosage comes directly from Rose Kentish and is confirmed by the way this wine presents.
Some of my subscribers have sent theirs back, some keeping, some trying their own dosage.
It's too dry for me.

And for every purchase they seem to be adding a 'Christmas Gift' to the order. I received a case of Abel's Tempest Chardonnay Pinot Noir with my single bottle order. Not to shappy, last year it was a case of Ativo.
