I have a mate who is thinking of changing from QF FF to CX Marco Polo.

His QF membership year starts 1 Sept so he will still be SG for 10.5 months. He spends alot of time in Asia/HKG and rarely flies AUS domestic. Even as a QF SG, he has been given alot (maybe 20-40%, usually on short haul) of op-ups when traveling CX Y, so he thinks as a CX Gold (or whatever SG equivelent) he will get even better treatment, and also might be able to use points for upgades. He has alot of QF points which he struggles to use and doesn't feel he gets any love from QF even as QG.

My question is what is the downside of CX Marco Polo/Asia Miles? (assuming if he starts posting to CX now and gets CX gold equivelent before his QF SG runs out)

Award redemptions rate are only slightly better than QFF's, if at all.

CX are known to look after their top level generally better than Qantas's do thier own.

Status is a lot harder to earn - it will take 210,000 status miles to make Diamond from a standing start. CX have a "mileage reset" rule as you hit each tier threshold. First to silver 30K then 0 then to 60K then 0 then to 120K then you are DIAMOND! that is 210,000 status miles.

One Diamond is reached, it requires 120K status mile PA to retain; with no soft landing.

So from what I can gather, after getting 30,000 miles he will be MPC silver, which will get him lounge acces when travelling CX but not other OW airlines (he is QC Life anyway).

In order to get to OW Saphire before his QF SG runs out 31SEP08, he would need to get 30,000 miles, then need an additional 60,000 to get MPC Gold?

However he would get 12 months from the time he quals MPC Silver to get the 60k for gold?

Not too worried about points burn rates, but just the ability to use them.

Have I got this right...For earning club credits:

All CX and Dragon econ fares earn 1:1, QF Y earns 1:1, all other QF economy earns 0.5:1.

So it would take 7 BNE-HKG discount Y legs to get to Silver, then and additional 14 legs to get gold (assuming 4500 miles), as opposed to 10 legs on QF to retain silver, plus 14 legs to get to SG. So easier to get MPO Gold, but a little harder to keep.

You have used an example of how to reach MPC Silver and Gold compared to QF Silver and Gold purely from long haul travel BNE-HKG. What you will find with MPC Club is that once you take into consideration short haul travel as well as long haul it will be a lot harder to attain and then trying to maintain MPC Gold status.

As an example HKG-BKK return is 2,098 miles which is 6.99% of MPC Silver or 3.5% of MPC Gold where as with QFF it is 30 SCs which is 10% of QF Silver or 5% of QF Gold. Another example is HKG-MNL return is 1,422 miles which is 4.74% of MPC Silver or 2.37% of MPC Gold whereas with QFF it is still 30 SCs which is 10% of QF Silver or 5% of QF Gold.

If only doing long haul economy then MPC Club would be suitable but if doing a mixture of long haul or short haul then I would stick with QFF. Afterall the earn/burn rates are not that different.

CX may status match initially. It is aimed at getting disgrunted PPS club members away from SQ i think.

Good point! I will pass this info on and he can decide bassed on his future travel plans. How many club points do you get for J travel? I cant find it on the CX website.

I think First Class is 150%, Business Class is 125%, Premium Economy is 110% (currently BA only) and economy a mixture of 100%, 50% and 0% depending on booking class.

I think you need to be SIN-based and a current PPS club customer.

It is quite possible this is the case, although the ad does not give much away (perhaps wisely!)

They do have corporate status matches, so they will match in certain circumstances. Unaware of the circumstances in which any 'non-corporate' matching occurs.
