Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

A trick that works for me to see a SMH article is to right click on the link in chrome and "Open link in incognito window". Provided you do not have any other incognito windows prior, you will be able to read the article.
Legend! That worked! Thankyou.

Bit rough that some Chinese students got on a plane legitimately to fly here and by the time they landed, the ban was introduced and they were treated rather less than kindly when they arrived.

Not as rough was it would be for the people they may possibly infect.
The ban should have come into force weeks before it did.

The exemption should be for citizens only.

In a way I think the Aus Universities are reaping what they've sowed.

Not 100% sure any of the stats being presented around the place (other than maybe Japan) can be trusted.

Regardless, I have been looking each day at a couple of sites that are tracking the virus. One the John Hopkins Uni and the other jobtube.

However today I saw one (worldmeters) that great far greater insight (at least to me) of the state of affairs. It tracks the severity of cases and also gives the option of viewing graphs in linear and logarithmic.

On the pessimistic side, of the 40,000 in China 6,500 are serious. I suspect that means we will see quite a few more deaths from that country before this is over.

Conversely on brighter side, looking at the logarithmic graphs for the disease there are green shoots that detections are tapering off compared to the first week or so and only 8 cases outside China currently are assessed as severe. (Severe - Singapore 6 and one each for Thailand and France.)

My office is preparing for an industry expo and we need thousands of disposable gloves and masks.

Having no luck in obtaining supply and the expo is a few months away so its not like we left it to last minute.

AOG?

All the tracking sites are using official stats from Chinese sources , to that end they cannot be simply believed.
The info is certainly much better than nothing and gives us some idea.. but definitive ??…nope...

It might be interesting to see if the company is able to exclude any claims at all then if you travel and blame Corona virus regardless of what actually the incident was.

We the the Australian Insurance Act, or whatever it’s called... came in a long time ago and prevents insurers doing the sort of thing you mention.

If you get hit by a car it’s going to be a tough ride to blame it on corona. Or fall and break your ankle (etc).

CE’s response from his TI company will be pretty standard across all companies I would expect, and is no different to any other event. If the volcano goes again in Bali you might be excluded for that, but fall and break an ankle and still covered (etc)

The flu-like disease claimed its highest number of fatalities in China so far on Monday, up by 90 to more than 900, with 40,235 infections recorded since the epidemic began. The head of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the figure could be "just the tip of the iceberg".

Well I’m not advocating punishment for being a Chinese student.
I just think they should not of been allowed to get on the plane in the first place. Not found that there is a cut off halfway across on their flight, that’s just plain absurd.
It’ hardly the young people‘s fault that the system was faulty. They are allowed to get on the plane and suddenly become persona non grata.

You've gotta draw the line somewhere, bio-security concerns outweigh any possible inconvenience for incoming passengers. Always has and always will be that way.

There’s a bit of stating the bleeding obvious here. of course bio security takes precedence nobody is saying it doesn’t, that was not the point.

I don’t think that’s the case.

Not sure about that, some of the updates I've been shown from various universities seem to be more preoccupied with "diversity and inclusion" than actually putting forward any sort of concrete preventative measures.

I have a trip booked in a month's time to Thailand via SIN. I REALLY hope this all dies down by then because I a) do not want to cancel and b) do not want to cancel.

I also want to know that if I do leave the country, I will be able to get back in regardless of where I have been/who was on the plane with me.

With flights in the air day and night from China, it would be difficult to pick a point to announce the ban that wouldn't affect several plane loads of Chinese citizens. Perhaps they could have considered somewhere that could be used for 2 weeks of quarantine, but it could be difficult to accommodate the numbers. Self quarantine for 2 weeks sounds great, but seeing how that worked in Melbourne, and having to accommodate maybe a 100 or more passengers, I think the Government would be damned either way. We either ban or we don't, and once the ban comes in to effect then compliance takes place.

Within a month? Having anything close to an ironclad guarantee before you go sounds unrealistic to me.
