I am scheduled to fly to China (Beijing) on Sunday February 16 returning from China (Shanghai) on Sunday February 23
In light of Federal Government ‘Smart Traveller’ web site advising ‘DO NOT TRAVEL TO CHINA’ China Travel Advice & Safety | Smartraveller - what would be my Travel Insurance situation under existing Policy xx_xx_xx_X if indeed I did travel to China during this period?
I assume you will need to run this past the Underwriter?
As I am pressed for time could you please respond to me as a matter of urgency?
I look forward to your response

I have referred your query to the insurer and they have advised the following :
If you decide to go against the warning and travel to China the policy will respond and cover you for any incident that would normally be covered except for contracting Coronavirus and any costs involved relating to the virus.
If you decide to cancel your travel to China the policy will cover you for any out of pocket expenses that cannot be retrieved from the original provider, for example the airlines may refund your flights direct to you.
Happy to discuss further if you need.

Wuhan was quarantined I believe from 23 Jan.

Conference in Singapore was 20-22 Jan.

The ban was imposed January 23. The meeting was January 20-22. And obviously people could have left well before that and still have it.

It might be interesting to see if the company is able to exclude any claims at all then if you travel and blame Corona virus regardless of what actually the incident was.

That seems reassuring, as long as you don’t mind if necessary being out of pocket for 14 days+ accommodations and needing to buy a new flight home.

I flew NRT-SIN during SARS and the loading was even lighter than that - there were more FAs than passengers. Only downside was security had nothing to do so they gave me and my belongings a very thorough and protracted search.

And I trust you always remember to remove those tissues before item of clothing is put in the wash!

Don’t remind me - grr. The one time I was too busy to check kids’ pockets was always the time they had a tissue in there. It’s amazing how much of the wash one tissue can destroy. Eventually I banned them - hankies only.

We flew to London a month after 9/11, in fact the day the Americans went into Afghanistan, the plane was still reasonably full but tourist sites were dead. There were only 5 people to see the Crown Jewels at the tower and we could look at them for as long as we liked.

Yes, they have been known to disallow a claim for say a broken toe because you had depression eight years ago.

It might be interesting to see if the company is able to exclude any claims at all then if you travel and blame Corona virus regardless of what actually the incident was.

They are apparently going door to door in Wuhan and taking anyone with signs of the virus into the “makeshift” hospitals - presumably the quarantine centres. It would be quite terrifying given the reports circulating as to the conditions in them, but I can see why the authorities would want to do it to lock down spread.

Cancelled reward flight to hong kong with virgin (WP tier) no penalties full refund on points within the hour.
Did same with Qantas (silver) on the return leg 12000 point penalty and 2 week wait to get the rest of the points back.

So sketchy advice I am getting out of China today is that many provinces are curtailing movement into Province by non-residents. That in itself has pretty well killed off next weeks visit to China - my planned arr port Beijing then visit Tianjin next day - cannot enter Tianjin - fly from Beijing to Shanghai - yep don't think that is restricted as yet - train Shanghai to Hangzhou no can do as Zhejiang Province probably prohibiting entry to non-residents.

The real kicker here is that factory owners are operating in the dark and are also operating on sketchy info - half baked directives not to open - must provide ALL movts of ALL staff last 14 days - staff must stay home indoors - right old mess.

No specific directives re Intl visitors but you would need to land in Province and dep from inside Province - all too hard now.

I cannot give any clearer info as our partners just don't know

Yes I saw last week that they had given her a visa to come. Very sad and good that humanity prevailed in this case.

I am so totally "over" this whole thing. As usual the media made a huge fuss over something that was serious but in a relevant way truly non-news.

In case I get accused of that common label of a "denier", no I do not think coronavirus does not exist I think that it is actually much more prevalent in China than the numbers state - whether this is due to State censorship or whatever, I do not care. And I am certain that over the coming months many hundreds or more will die from it. But my perspective, as always, is the same - it is just a simple reiteration of media hype, where one of many problems becomes the focus, even though in real effect and impact it is truly trivial. Anyone with an ounce of reality would know that other flus and known diseases, use of mobile phones whilst driving, etc etc kill far more many people everyday.

I do think that one day a real flu will arise, and will kill millions.

This Coronavirus is a puppy. As in in a world where diseases have always existed, this one is so very mild. It is great that the world medical practitioners are honing their skills, but in my philosophical position this sort of thing is an inevitable way the world tries to even things. The human population is ever increasing, is ever mingling. One day a flu will arise that is infectious within days or hours. With our international travel, this will mean that when such arises it will be global before it it is even recognized.

We have a generation that is focussed on Climate Change. People who march and do all sorts of things in an intent to correct human influence of the world. I suspect that they do not know that they are fighting a very long-term crusade. To gain control of the weather is something that would take many decades, with even more to notice any change. Yet a sudden flu can arise with no warning...

As a believer in silver-linings, maybe this sudden peril will get people to focus on pressing problems. The truly urgent stuff. This Coronavirus is not the product of carbon burn - on the contrary the affluence of human society due to carbon burn allows them some chance to fight it. This illness arose because of the sheer weight of population numbers in a point in the globe. That population enabled by that affluence that burning carbon has brought...
