Citibank Reward Points to QFF

Just rang Citibank, happened to get the (in)famous Gwen, who readily agreed to upgrading my Gold card to Platinum Rewards for free. However my $119.00 annual fee will still apply. Cheers, Barnaby

BARNABY, congrats. Did you previously receive an offer in the mail for the free upgrade, like the last person who did this had ?

Why get tied up with having to give Qantas all your points both now and into the future.

Since my last reply, I have done a lot more investigating of Velocity rewards. In the majority of cases, Velocity require less points than Qantas for travel in Australia. International flights with associated airlines are much the same as Qantas.

Velocity is not restricted to the number of seats available for points usage. If there is a vacant seat when making a booking using points, then you get it. Unlike Qantas, Velocity is not restricted to the number of rewards seats available.

With Velocity, you are not lumbered with giving all your points to them but they will be like all other programs and expire after 3 years if there is no activity.

I believe that currently, Velocity points do not expire at all.

Negative Flashware, dear Gwen was only too keen to offer me the free upgrade when I mentioned that I would be cancelling my Gold card if they were not able to accomodate my Platinum request. Will still cost me $119 annual fee though!

They expire after three years:
Velocity Terms and Conditions said:
If there has been no Points or Status Credit earning or Points redeeming activity recorded on your membership account for a period of 36 consecutive months VRPL will, on 30 days notice terminate your membership. To avoid having your Membership terminated, simply earn or redeem Velocity Points or Status Credits during the 30 day notice period.

Not really; I already have the Qantas ANZ Visa with direct sweep.

Since the Citi Card is fee free "for life" I'll basically stop using it, perhaps as a backup Visa card. My primary card is 1½ point/$ Amex.

Likewise my "free for life" gold card will be sitting at the bottom of the draw. Two phone calls to citibank (Plat sales and existing cardholders)plus Email from the online account resulted in no upgrade to the free for life Platinum card.

Have been approved today by CBA for their Plat. card for $200 per year and no charge for Supp. card. They have a current offer that will give you 20000 QFF points if you sign up before end of March and spend $1000 before the end of April.

Maybe Citibank will come to the party over the next 12 months ??

Just a quick Question for everyone here,

ive got a plat CBA MC with $200 pa fee, currently not working so the $200 pa is quite high. ive got lots of expenses as well, which is not a problem.

a family member has the citibank plat card Fee free.

I am thinking about cancelling my card and getting the family member to get me a supp card , how much are the supp cards,

we still need the 1:1 ratio because I put through about 20,000-50,000 points per year...

any comments appreciated!!

Supplementary cards are also free.

Supplementary cards for the "Free for Life" Citi Cards should be free (at least mine are). However, note that Citi did charge the $90 fee. A Quick call had this credited back so no issue there.

great!!

thanks for that

i know this is a little off topic, but is this worth doing???

im trying to save my $200, all I want is a 1;1 ratio card.

my card is good, however for $200 i don't think its worth it if I can go to citibank,

do you think I will run into any problems, I would think that the only problem being when it comes time to pay the bill trying to work out who used what for what, however, we never bicker over money, so it shouldn't be a big deal..... well I hope!

What do you hope to redeem the points for? This will affect your card choice.

we have both just enrolled in the qanats direct transfer thing!

Maybe have a look at this site: Frequent Flyer Credit Cards | Qantas | Velocity | AMEX

The NAB Qantas Gold Card looks like it may do what you need (http://www.nab.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/nab/nab/home/personal_finance/4/30/4).

Note you only get 2 points for every $3 though, rather than 3 points for $3 on the VISA, and it does have some whacky caps in place.... Hm, so maybe not all that good after all.

The sup card purchases are clearly identified and listed separately on the monthly statement.

I have three sup cards and have no trouble working out which member of the family bought what , and how much they owe me.:D

yeah, that might be the way to go,

and ill get the qantas FF annual transfer to any family member once a year done as well!!

I have a Citi Gold fee-free-for-life card with 7000 points sitting there doing SFA. I want to transfer them to QFF, and remain in the program.

Here's yesterdays mindless experience with Gwen at the Citibank call centre in Manila.

Gold and Silver cards are locked out of the QFF program. Only Platinum cards ($250 annually plus $19 annually) are eligible for direct sweep of points to QFF.

Citi would not upgrade my card to Platinum unless I pay $250 + $19. Citi would not budge or negotiate (I guess that's what impending bankruptcy does).

Here's today's experience with Janet at the Citibank call centre in Manila. This time I went to SALES, rather than the EXISTING CARDHOLDER centre. I mentioned I was thinking about upgrading to a Platinum, and had previously been offered this upgrade fee-free.

It went like a charm, and was approved immediately, and with only the annual $19 QFF sweep fee to pay. I can live with that.

I hope this is useful for anyone with a Gold card wanting to remain in the QFF program. Its now beer o'clock.

Cheers
Bush

Which phone number did you ring? 13 24 84?

On the phone at the moment, tried what you did ... no luck so far. She explained I could apply for a Platinum .. to which I replied "if it's not fee free like I have now, there's no point so I may as well cancel as without the QFF points theres not much point".

I am now on hold while she "sees what she can do for me"

Well that was a waste of time. Threatened to cancel, and met with a "still can't do anything for you".

I'll be cancelling this card at the end of the month.
