I know that now. I promise, this time in 3 weeks I'll do just that. Might even have to give up the shower as its a trans Tasman. So far I don't have a lot of company. But no caviar this time.

The caviar is served on a tartlet of creme fraiche as a canapé.

In other words, think of a tartlet and how much could fit onto that. And I'd doubt highly there will be crumbled egg, cut chives, red onion, mother of pearl spoon, or ice chilled vodka to go with it.

It could be a spoonful, or it could be a sprinkle. Either way, I wouldn't start to get overly excited - many of you are simply going to post back that the airline should just shove it after you are bitterly disappointed.

Why being negative even before it started? Presentation doesn't have to be exactly like the other airlines and still can be good. I'm sure no one in his right mind is going to book QF F now just because the caviar addition so even if it's not going to be as impressive as expected, it's still better then nothing.

Because people are making a big hype and dance about this before anyone has even had a chance to see or taste one, and then they are going to find it is not what they expected based on other experiences.

Frankly given the anti-QF cynicism as thick as a war bunker on this forum (especially from members who have already posted on this topic), I'm surprised it was me that weakly kicked it off.

Mark my words: at least one post here will lay into the airline when the caviar is served, and it will be because the company implemented a "lame new thing". And it will be because expectations are far too high and they won't judge it on the very words you say - "it is still better than nothing".

Personally, I can't see the big hype over caviar (I certainly don't use it as a choice discriminator, much like I do not discriminately judge a lounge just because it doesn't offer Champagne), but I do like the taste of it (not as a purist, unfortunately - it needs accompaniments, and creme fraiche is a nice one to go with it). A shame that something so small can actually cost so much (and have concerning environmental burdens to go with it). From a culinary opinion, I'm afraid of the tartlets, because the pastry may be too powerful for the caviar and it will overtake the flavour, or they won't put enough caviar (since it is going on top, not filling out the tartlet). So you won't be able to enjoy the caviar and given it is a canape (you're not getting a jar of caviar presumably), you'll only have one realistic chance to savour it properly.

Frankly speaking, there's no point having such an expensive ingredient if you cannot enjoy it properly. You might as well put more common caviar (e.g. red ones, much cheaper, some available of Australian provenance).

If I got one, I'd suspect I'd be asking for a small spoon to tip off the caviar from the top, then combining the elements ad lib.

I guess I should qualify my opinion is based on the presentation being:

• Tartlet shell (ideally made of a low salt short crust, as thin as possible)
• Layer of creme fraiche for the tartlet filling
• Sprinkling of at least a heaped teaspoon of the caviar on top
• As a canape, one tartlet per passenger with other offered canape

I'm glad if Qantas can offer nice caviar canape tartlets. It'd be a nice new element on the menu and of course it will be there to whet the appetite and showcase the caviar (just like previous canapes feature an ingredient like olives, sardines etc.). But let's not kid ourselves here - this is not a caviar course.

Of course, I'm happy to eat my words if the presentation and quantity ends up being much greater than I describe, but I think people should take care winding up the hype.

First, I don't see how thirty-something posts so far (some are negative btw) in such a big forum can be regarded as "making a big hype".
Second, people complain about everything so I'm sure it will be the case here as well, no matter how the presentation will look like.
I didn't read QF saying they will serve the biggest or best caviar dish in the air. If anyone has high expectations based on wishful thinking and later gets disappointed they should blame themselves, not the airline.
Good thing about F is, if you don't like a certain dish/canapé, you can select something else from the menu so introducing something new on the menu (even if it's not as good as expected) is always a positive move in my view.

This is a light-hearted thread and I doubt anyone would seriously change their travel plans because Qantas have started serving caviar (no matter how big a serve).

Nonetheless it's nice to see them making an effort to improve the standard of food in F - other than the champagne their first class F&B has never really been as premium as a lot of their competitors, and certainly not commensurate with their prices.
