Carrying case of wine MEL-SYD

These arguments are made all the time and are rubbish. There is no evidence whatsoever that backs these claims up. In the USA several airlines have size limits on carry-ons but no weight limits. Size limits are done everywhere (for safety reasons), weight limits are done for commercial reasons.

However, there is a limit of 10 or 15 kg for lifting at shoulder height or above.

I travel with wine quite a bit and the most I have ever taken for carry on was a six-pack. You'd be better off shipping it as mentioned via Auspost or a courier like Fastaway. From memory it costs me $16 to send a case from rural South Australia (The Barossa) to Sydney and it takes on average 3 days to get there. For that price it's not worth the hassle of lugging it around yourself and at this time of year there are less problems with temperature fluctuations during transit buggering up your precious cargo.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, yep I think it was a bit ambitious to take a 12 bottle case on as carry on luggage. Will look at freighting or just taking 6 of the best as hand luggage!

Not only that, there is the danger of an overweight missile loose in the cabin in the event of turbulence/rapid runway deceleration/crash. The overheads are designed to hold only so much weight.
+1 very true as well...but alas the general flying public dont consider many of the hidden dangers accossiated with air travel....all the rules/regulations that an airline imposes are there for a reason and are legally binding...some are just not as obvious to the public as others..

In decades of working airside at international airports I have never seen a baggage handler throw a bag. Read the booking conditions of the ticket which clearly indicate maximum weights for hand luggage. Next time you're at the airport (judging from your status you fly very frequently) have a look at the frame placed at the check-in area which demonstrates maximum dimensions for hand luggage and see if you can imagine a case of wine fitting inside it.

I have looked out of windows at airports and seen, many a time, baggage handlers, one by one, lift a bag off a trolley move it and hold over the lower end of the conveyor belt and drop it onto the belt, guiding it with one hand.

i.e. Lift - swing-over - drop (with guidance).

If such is not at least considered forceful, then I am mystified.

This was observed in Oz, NZ, US, UK and many other places.

Myself, bottles are in my checked luggage if I have only bought two or three or a trip - had no problems. If I buy or like the produce most cellar doors or brewery outlets do have a freight company that delivers, which is better than carrying it at all ($8 -$12 per dozen.) Have carried on three bottles of rum from up north, glad I did as the luggage was misplaced.

QANTAS has a 7kg carry on limit for domestic. Those who hide the fact their carry on is "light" only risk causing injury to others either in flight or just handling baggage out of the overheads.

One day we may see excessive overhead storage bringing the house down.

Size is not the issue. It definitely would fit, lots of peoples wheely bags are bigger than a case of wine. I totally agree on the weight side though. Not to worry as I said I am only taking a box of 6 now anyway.

Actually, that's 2 x 7Kg for almost all Qantas domestic Jet services.

Size regulation still goes with the weight. You would have to pack 3x3 bottles on QANTAS.

Jetstar expect you to carry all your stuff and the combined weight is only 10kg.

"For our Starter Fares you are permitted one main item of carry-on baggage and one other small item, with a total combined weight of up to 10kg."

You forgot to mention the size regulation that goes with the weight. I only quoted QANTAS.

Not sure what you mean. With almost all Qantas domestic jet services, you can carry on up to 2 x 105cm bags (e.g. Rollaboards) each weighing up to 7 kg.

Yep my point was just how much people get away with, weight wise. There are size restrictions and if you do go over the 105cm to 115cm, it becomes 1x 7kg again.

Not that it has anything to do with carrying wine on Jetstar, but indeed, on most Qantas domestic jet , it is 2 x 105 or 1 x 115.

Not sure how wine is moved around today, but the old "bottle shock " concerns with a premium wine concern me. Having said that I brought some Eileen hardy back from Adelaide and it went in the hold. My theory being it will sit undisturbed in my vintner for the next 7 or 8 years ( or more) in the hope it will age gracefully and recover form the journey. , watch this space for regular updates in about ooooh say 5-10 years :).

Well as it states on the side of the 6 pack of wine that it weighs 7kg. So you would be allowed to take on 2 x 6 packs, thus on a Qantas Jet service you would be allowed to carry a 12 pack case of wine just in two 6 packs.
