Cairns Temp Qp

Have to correct my previous post - QP should be opening early Dec.

It took another settling chardy to concentrate on the sign.

The new construction certainly means you get your exercise disembarking and walking the ramps for ages to the luggage carousel at the northern end of the terminal, then back out and across a few acres to the rental cars. The repeat jouney from the rental cars to the QF check-in at the far southern end of the terminal then retrace your trip thru security and find the temp QP gets a nice thirst going - then there's the 2pm embargo:evil:

I was just imbibing my first chardy after the 2pm temperance barrier was lifted in the Cairns QP when I noticed a sign that stated that the QP was closing from 19 Oct to late Dec when the new QP was to open.
Thanks for the info... I will be there on Oct 15, so just make the cut-off this time.

Mentioned in this month's newsletter:

"To make way for these new developments, the existing Qantas Club lounge will close from 19 October 2009. Qantas Club members and eligible Frequent Flyers should see staff at the Cairns Airport Service Desk for updates to alternative arrangements. "

So perhaps one may get some vouchers as they did when the PER international QP was closed.

The new lounge is set to open this Wednesday, 16th December.

So perhaps one may get some vouchers as they did when the PER international QP was closed.
Yes, they gave you a $15 voucher to use.

From the "Cairns Post" 15th Dec:
getimage.aspx

Upbeat: Qantas Queensland regional general-manager Andrew Hogg (middle) has the ears of (from left) Alex Jefferis, Grace BrowningTanner, Paul Nicholas and Eleonora Paton at yesterday’s sneak peek of the Qantas Club lounge.

VIPs were given a sneak preview of the 1000sq m lounge overlooking the runway yesterday afternoon.

The lounge, which is above the old club in the departure area, is understood to have cost the airline $2.5 million.

Queensland regional general-manager Andrew Hogg said it was “the largest by a long way” of any regional airport in Australia.

He said it was triple the size of the old area with double the number of seats.

Mr Hogg said the Cairns club revealed the new look to be adopted throughout the nation and worldwide, using white walls and tiled areas, brown carpet with white streaks and maroon, red, brown and beige seats.

Other firsts include iMac computers as well as wireless internet capabilities and extra power outlets.

“This is a significant investment justified to support the excellent Qantas product,” Mr Hogg said.

He said it was a more modern and open feel and less formal.

“This well suits a leisure destination such as Cairns with a fantastic view of the runway,” Mr Hogg said.

“We’re very confident that people will enjoy the new lounge and it will lead to an increase in business,” he said.

“This lounge is what is expected of a full service and premium airline such as Qantas.”

Was in town and decided to check out the new Club and take some photos.

It is around the corner from Gate 20 on the left past a new Qantas Desk in the departure lounge. You take the longest escalator in Cairns into a very open and impressive lounge. It feels spacious yet private with different seating sections with a good view of the tarmac.

Interesting that the sign in the second photo says "VIP Room". A new level above chairman's lounge? Probably not.

Thanks for the photos fellas, as I'm up there next week to start another year of Deep North travel.

Seems like there is still a long haul from QF check-in/bag drop/security to the QP. I presume one has to descend from QP like SYD/MEL to boarding gate?
