But I am not likely to be going back to Cairns for another 10 years
Bundy, I'll just have to make it up for you, as I will now rearrange my preferred QP to Cairns instead of Brownsville.:D

I think you can use a QP pass even if not flying QF. My parents used mine when flying emirates.

I don't have a complimentary Qantas Lounge pass now to look at the terms and conditions but if I remember correctly you must be flying Qantas or Jetstar on the day to get entry into the lounge. Depending on who is at reception they may let you inside if flying on any Oneworld airline.

Nothing wrong with the temp Cairns QP; was a little bit full after an hour or so.
I was there in late January at 6:00am and I was the only one in lounge. From what I remember the temporary lounge was satisfactory and the staff more than eager to be helpful.

How about if Cairns is the venue chosen for Ozfest VI or VII?

I finally gone into QP for the first time yesterday at Cairns, despite I have had a number of QF trips domestically and internationally over the years. So I decided to write a review on this.

We checked in at Cairns at 2:30pm to Sydney even though the flight does not depart until 5:15pm, because it was raining all day yesterday and Mrs Edison found Cairns city a bit boring with most of the shops closed and found Cairns Central not much special. Cairns airport is currently in a major upgrade mode. We went to QP and handed over the complimentary QP pass from Qantas Premium Amex I got earlier to the counter lady, and she checked that we have Qantas boarding pass before we can get in. The QP was quite empty at that time so we make ourselves comfortable sitting next to the windows near the ASX board. Then I helped myself with a Heinekken and a Hahn Premium, tea, some snacks (ham, smoked sausage, bread, crackers etc) as well as minestrone and corn soup. Mrs Edison somehow loves the soup and had quite a few of these. I went to the internet for a short time before going back to the lounge and leisurely read the a number of magazines and newspapers. The staff were helpful.

By 4pm there were a lot of people coming into QP and it became standing room early. In a way we were lucky we got the window seat early as we can see a lot of people getting food and alcohol and then found themselves no place to sit down.

We finally went to the gate at 4:55pm to catch our flight to Sydney. Both Mr and Mrs Edison found the QP comfortable and enjoyable. Whilst the QP ended up becoming very busy and standing room only, since Qantas decided to cut the flights in/out of Cairns (it was big news in Cairns over the weekend) maybe they will have less people using the club overtime.

Mr and Mrs Edison is now looking for ways to get into a QP whenever flying QF sometime in the future.

The flights cut by Qantas are from the international terminal, not the domestic. Any reduction in domestic numbers would be due to fewer passengers taking up domestic connections.

The question arises whether the QP in the international terminal will be closed. There are Oneworld flights remaining on Cathay Pacific on the HKG(BNE)CNS route.

The chances of those business gurus at QF keeping a lounge open, beyond a short placatory time, for a few CX and a heap of Jetstar flights would have to be regarded as remote :(.

I'm ready to stand corrected, but isn't QF69 still stopping in CNS on the way from BNE to NRT? Hopefully that should be enough reason to maintain a presence.

Unfortunately, that is one of the flights to be scuppered. Both flights to NRT are going - the SYD-CNS-NRT and the BNE-CNS-NRT. There will be no more QF flights from the international terminal with the former flight to SIN via DRW already euthanised some months ago.

It also means that the relatively comfortable domestic legs of those services will no longer be available to hop between CNS and SYD or BNE, representing additional loss of capacity in and out of CNS and the last of any halfway decent business class.

The current booking schedule show the last QF69 stopping at CNS on December 17.

Never speak too soon; I was original scheduled to fly BNE-SYD-KIX for a flight I booked back in March for travel in November; after the JQ schedule changes I am flying BNE-CNS-KIX; I hope the place is changed by then.

Ozfest VI is likely off the agenda for me. :( I might make an appearance but only if the universe lines up.

Bundy Bear,

I got your email thanks. I've done that cruise previously and agree with you. Thanks for the prompt.

Sorry you won't be at Oz Fest.

For those interested - as previously mentioned on this forum, yes - QF are using the former AN Golden Wing in CNS. Prior to QF moving in there, the lounge was used by Australian Airlines as a cabin crew training facility, complete with original GW furniture, TV's, plates, cups, saucers, boarding passes, uniforms and even GW napkins! Barring the artwork, phones, fax, PC's which were probably sold at auction - Ansett left everything else in there when the facilities were sold back to Cairns Airport. I seem to remember that the trademark "Omega" clock still sits above the bar area.

For those of us a little nostalgic, flick the TV's across to a blank channel, look really carefully and you'll still see the "AN" flight numbers phospher burnt into the monitors.

Was a lovely lounge - and glad to see it being used again.

Yes, it is a nice lounge, even today. Just somewhat crowded at certain times of the day, especially when SYD, MEL, BNE flights are due to depart at similar times.

Kinda hoping that a little more space is part of the plan when the terminal refit is finally completed (IMHO don't think that overcrowding of lounges is acceptable, but luckily I'm not paying a QC membership being WP).

At least most lounge staff at CNS helpful...frontline staff being a saving grace as (almost) always for QF...

The QF Check in Chick told me last Friday in Cairns that the new QP would be upstairs AND with a tarmac view.

Now, I'm sure there won't be a need for a J Lounge in Cairns to take away that fancy view ala BNE QP - would there??

I will probably ride QF 167 SYD-CNS, the last flight on this route for QF, on Wed 17th Dec.

plus inside info - Qf Club in INTL CNS to close imminently. Tough t*tties if you are travelling CX to HKG or Deathstar to NRT (in Starclass etc)...no lounge for you!

PLUS the new QP in DOM CNS not even started to be built yet. Sure new check ins now open, but air conditioning and belts problematic in early days.

reckon on visiting the ex-Golden Wing temp QP in CNS DOM for a LOOOOONNNGGG time yet....

I was up visitng family last weekend and I think it was day 5 of the new checkin. The Chekcin Lady mentioned it was the firsty day the belts had been working properly!

I do about 4-6 trips up a year and this time noticed the QP was ALOT quieter than normal. I always go for the 2nd midday SYD flight as the first 767 flight and the MEL/BNE flights make the place like a zoo. rocked up a bit earlier than normal and it really was only about 50% full (usually 100% at that time).
