Not good news especially on cigarettes and tobacco....

A cut to tobacco doesn't worry me, probably about time, though I'm sure haydensydney will blast me for saying that :p

Booze was cut as well, I think. What's the new limit?

Blasphemy!

We must take to the streets and protest!

But honestly can't see that being an issue considering duty free in Australia is more than Dan's a lot of the time, and you can't usually buy it at an overseas port as they confiscate it before you board.

How Glib ... :-|

Very few who frequent these forums would even consider purchasing D/F grog at an Australian Airport.

Recently I picked up a litre of Stolly in NZ for NZD19.99 ...

I like to stock up my OP Bundy in SIN. I've actually had to buy a bottle in Australia in the last 6 months. :o Now that is something to protest about.

They thought of that. It's a domestic increase in beer taxes.
Beer drinkers won't escape the Budget pain, contributing an estimated $2.183 billion to Federal Government coffers over the next 12 months. The $75 million tax revenue rise comes despite a fall in the number of Aussies enjoying a pot to the lowest level in 65 years.
Canberra is looking to steadily increase its take from the amber fluid by another $200 million by 2015.
Australian Hotels Association chief executive Brian Kearney said Australians who enjoy an ale were once again copping it in the hip pocket.

Oh a $1.5 Billion surplus... Wow I must vote for Julia at the next election...............

Once the carbon tax changes to an ETS, revenues to the Gov will fall dramatically, and the Lib's will need to attempt to cut costs, and explain to the public why the budget is not really balanced.

Typical ALP Rubbish

That $55 is built into ticket prices I presume?

Not fussed about the tobacco, but hoping they haven't cut the DF alcohol limit too? That's the foundation of my spirits collection!! Link in the OP seems to suggest just tobacco?

You should watch lateline or something. Firstly, spending has been cut the be roughly the same as under the previous government as a % of GDP.

Then there was the performance of Andrew Robb - "We'll have a surplus of 1% of GDP". ~ 10 times the ALP surplus, with absolutely no statement of how they would do that. There's plenty of rubbish going around.

The only rubbish is what is actually happening/happened

This budget is just a wealth redistribution scheme, with the promised business tax cuts scrapped

Desperate money grab and massive cuts to simply attempt to fund a small surplus.

IF there is actually a 1.5 Billion or above, surplus next year, I'll shout a random member on here a trip to the OOL lounge in J on VA from MEL or SYD

Surplus figure based on GDP growth of 3.5% above the RBAs target guideline, and they dont normally cut interest rates when at the top,
plus an improvement in the global economy.

oh but despite this unemployment goes up ???

with greece about to implode thats a damm fine crystal ball

Indeed!

So many FAILS in this budget

All looks/sounds good but it will all fall to pieces

Carbon tax turning into the ETS is a huge one

Well I just spent 6 hours in the budget lock up and my goodness what a yawn.

If anyone wants electronic copies let me know. I didn't torture myself reading them this year!!

The Government will reduce the inbound duty free allowance for cigarettes and tobacco for international travellers aged 18 years and over to 50 cigarettes or 50 grams of tobacco, effective from 1 September 2012. This measure is estimated to provide savings to the Budget of $600.0 million over the forward estimates period.

Currently, when arriving in Australia, international travellers aged 18 years and over are able to bring in up to 250 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco free of duty.

The Government will increase the passenger movement charge by $8 to $55 per passenger with effect from 1 July 2012, with the charge to be indexed annually by movements in the Consumer Price Index thereafter. The measure is estimated to increase revenue by $610.0 million over the forward estimates period.

The passenger movement charge was last increased in 2008.

Of note:
- Duty free cigarettes and tobacco reduction will commence from 1 September 2012
- The passenger movement charge will increase with CPI from now on.

How did Wayne do with his 2011/2012 Budget now that he has pushed these new hand outs ino it? Stuffing the cash payments out before 30th June to keep them out of his numbers is not how to get a true surplus next year.
Looks like he was out by only 27 billion up from 17 billion on last years Budget night. This guy is a First Class Idiot but that is only my personal opinion.
The damage that he has wreaked on Australia will take more than a decade to fix.
Mercifully the use by date on his forehead is coming up and he may have only one more to go to be able to win that coveted prize of "Australia's worst ever Treasurer".
Prepaying your private health insurance premium is the small loophole he missed.
Strangely he seems to expect high income earners to want to continue putting funds into superannuation with that new tax. I would rather not bother and would prefer to use that money on travel.
