Brisbane international transit experience.

Can anyone speak to the transit experience in Brisbane for international travel.

I am arriving in Brisbane from PNG, then taking a flight to Dubai. I have a layover of 12 hours, which is outside the 8 hours I am allowed to remain in the departure lounges. Apparently, I need to therefore leave the airport to a transit hotel, then return to catch my DXB flight.

Is this requirement being enforced? I would prefer to just remain in the lounge until my flight is called.

Does BNE specifically state you cannot remain more than 8 hours in the international transit area? I am not aware of such a rule, unless it's a new covid requirement.

I don't see any way you would be allowed to leave the airport of your own accord at this point (assuming you are travelling in the near future). If you were required to go to a transit hotel, I imagine the government would provide this and escort you there (not sure who would have to pay). But I don't think this is likely - I'd say you probably wouldn't be able to leave the airport at all.

Also, I believe most or all of the international lounges at BNE are currently closed unfortunately.

Ah, I see. In that case, hopefully someone who has transited will respond but that page does say "will be required" to enter Australia and quarantine at a transit hotel. Doesn't really seem logical, but there you go.

To save on PCR tests the test needs to be within 72 hours of the second flight scheduled departure time, so somewhere less than 57 hours of the first flight.

The guidance says appropriate faculty eg hotel. With 12 hours, I think you might be taken to a holding area at the airport for 4-5 hours. It’s might be worth it to nicely ask the person in charge.

I do recall an AFFer coming for PNG recently, perhaps to a domestic connection but I don’t recall their transit being over 8 hours.

Thanks for the reply. That does sound more reasonable than having to leave the departure lounge, and into the pure Australian atmosphere, only to return back later that evening.

Well if you want an exemption beforehand, you can try your luck with the Qld CHO.

This webpage talks about exemptions from quarantine, but perhaps you might be able to use the same process ask for an exemption from the8 hour rule.
