From this evening people must stay at home except for shopping for basic necessities, daily exercise, any medical need and travelling to and from essential work.

Shops selling non-essential goods will also be shut and gatherings in public of more than two people who do not live together prohibited.

The UK death toll has reached 335.

If people do not follow the rules police will have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings, Boris Johnson said in a televised statement from Downing Street.

Other premises including libraries, playgrounds and outdoor gyms, and places of worship must also close immediately.

Parks will remain open for exercise but gatherings will be dispersed.

The government is also stopping all social events, including weddings, baptisms and other ceremonies - but funerals will be allowed.

This is life..... but not as you know it!

Australia will match you in I'd say, 2 weeks max. Has to be done. Be safe. I'm guessing no mail deliveries?

Critical stores that will be allowed to stay open.......... Supermarkets, Pharmacies and Funeral Homes.....

Went out for my usual morning walk to the supermarket, arrived 20 minutes before opening today. People ARE actually social distancing now, so that's a positive change. Counting as I go back... Gave up once I hit 200 people. Queues are considerably longer as expected given the announcement so more stock piling to continue. All I want is a roll of TP and some Vegemite. Fingers crossed they haven't cut the Vegemite being a non essential British item 😎

Still in line, even though it's a massive store they're only letting in 10 people at a time. This might take a while.

You could always fall back on the other mite, should you get really desperate. 😃

I'm glad they've finally put in some strict measures here. We live in an apartment with our dog so take her out 3/4 time /day bathroom and exercise. I'm surprised by how many people are still out and about, in parks walking in groups etc.

Came as a bit of a shock but won't bother us too much. I had a look at click and collect on Asda and Sainsburys but nothing available for at least a week in my area so will make the trip later this morning once I get some work done. Not looking forward to it.

In this morning's trip it was huge lines to get in and then only letting in 10-20 people at a time and that's a superstore size shop.

Found it interesting that the stuff restocked was the stuff you don't really need... But the essentials were close enough to zero. The essentials conveniently had price tags gone too.....

Asda Cardiff gate was relatively tame in comparison today. Wasn't any busier than I've experienced on a weekend. Plenty of fresh fruit and veg. No TP, soaps, flour, milk also low stocks...

Pretty much matches what I've seen here, although I have noticed they are generally busier. South of London in Surrey for us.

March 23 will mark a full year since the United Kingdom entered its first lockdown. Ahead of the anniversary, The Telegraph (UK) is publishing a week-long series on the decisions made early in the pandemic. In the essential first entry, Gordon Rayner explores the fateful choice by Boris Johnson to delay the lockdown. In this piece, Gordon also looks at 10 key reasons why Britain has one of the world's worst per-capita death tolls.

Thinking of all my UK AFF friends and family.
