Boeing to Boost 777 Output by 2013 Amid 787 Delays - Bloomberg

Boeing Co. plans to boost output of the 777 jet 66 percent by 2013, a move that will add revenue as the planemaker prepares to announce a seventh delay to its 787 Dreamliner.

Production of the 777s will rise to 8.3 aircraft per month in the first quarter of 2013, the Chicago-based company said today in a statement. In March, Boeing said the manufacturing rate would rise starting in mid-2011 to seven planes a month from five now.

Boosted by continuing demand and a hefty backlog, Boeing has announced plans to increase 777 production to 8.3 per month in the first quarter of 2013.

The move marks a record rate for the twinjet and comes on the heels of Boeing’s announcement in March to increase 777 production from five to seven aircraft per month in mid-2011. This rate increase, in turn, was brought forward by around nine months, following signs of a strong long-haul market recovery in early 2010.

Will it give some 777s as compensation for 787 delays?

Who knows, but I would have thought QF and JQ would prefer more A330s over 777s.

Which is cheaper to operate? Excluding the possibility that QF crew (flight deck & cabin) may need substantial retraining if it adopts 777s...

Anyone want to visualise a QF 772 or 773?

An A330 would be. QF don't run and 777's at the moment, so it would take months to certify crew on that type, whereas they have the A330 already going?

So when is the first 787 set to be delivered to a customer??? I've lost track of it now that there have been so many delays.

no-one knows.
latest from seattle papers is looking like at least six months and some big questions on 180minute approvals. Probably not an issue for the initial SIN base, but a big problem if they go transpac

If it comes with 60 minutes, out of the box, its going to be problematic for things like an Australian trans-con.
