Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I don't see how you can blame contact tracing for this. The fault lies squarely at the feet of Case 5

Please read whole sentence, which did primarily blame case 5.

However, the failure Im talking about is how case 5 got infected. There is a missing link between the guy who returned from SA and Case 5 getting infected, that was not picked up via the original contract tracing related to the guy who returned form SA.

Case 5 is clearly responsible for all the spread he caused by failing to get tested when he had first symptoms, but instead choose to go to work and socialize whilst unwell and only got tested when contract tracers mandated that he had to.

There was a time gap between the clean-up from SA guy and this current cluster which began with Case 5. If that link was identified on the original contract tracing case 5 wouldnt have been able to wreak as much havoc as they had.

If people lie there is nothing more contact tracing can do

But they have QR scan codes at airport lounges.

This is state dependent, but required in NSW because venues which serve food and drinks (cafes, restaurants, pubs, clubs) have mandatory QR check in. The Qantas club is basically a pub. For example at QBR, was boarding pass only, at SYD its QR + boarding pass.

Of higher risk than ride share is supermarkets - as many older people pay with cash, so if they dont sign-in no way to find them. Looking at todays new tier 1 exposure sites, there is a huge number of supermarkets.

Has there been a Pizza guy lying event identified? What has been identified is that many people didn't QR check-in using official govt app at many of the Tier 1 sites. Gov check-in app should have been mandated much earlier, its been a key tool in track and trace.

Weimar seems to be twisting definitions, stating there are no mystery cases because all are genomically linked to SA HQ. That doesn't pass the pub test though because when same has happened in other states but an individual cant be named they insist they are mystery cases.

From ABC blog:

Weimar: No. There are no mystery cases. Every case has been linked to either City of Whittlesea or Port Melbourne or Arcare Maidstone. They are part of the South Australian hotel quarantine.

Reporter: How many cases don't have sources? We had yesterday the first aged care worker, didn't know the source. Is that still the case?

Weimar: We have two or three lines of inquiry between the four individuals around Arcare and the City of Whittlesea, Port Melbourne cluster. We have it defined what was the actual effect that came across. There were a number of scenarios and we are working on that. We are only clear about genomically, they are connected.

Reporter:
In total, how many cases in the clusters combined there we not know the source of?

Weimar: In terms of the precise collection, there are two. There is a connection between our Victorian from Wollert, who arrived back in the state on 4 May, the connection between him and case five has not been precisely established. We have a number of, two or three potential scenarios. We have a connection from the Arcare aged care cluster with a couple of different routes that could have been taken from the edge of the wider City of Whittlesea Port Melbourne.

Blah blah blah. Bottom line: word twisting, and they have absolutely no idea when businesses will be able to trade again or citizens able to move around relatively restriction free again.

What if instead of lie...it is simply they don't come forward? It was reported the other day that the number of QR check ins in NSW has dropped by about 25% since January. Are people in NSW going out 25% less than they did in January?

why on earth don't they give you an ongoing referral so you don't have to go in just for that!

Referrals (after the initial one) are a total money making scam.

Once your GP refers to a specialist and they take you on as a patient i.e. do a surgery or treat you, if they then require you to come back for annual checks as my Mum's surgeon and oncologist do, there should be no need for ongoing referrals. Yet every year, they ask you to make an appointment but then require you to go to GP for another referral to keep that appointment - its crazy. They know your history and they want you to come back. The referral is simply a time waster which generates revenue for the GP.

I can understand if you were referred for a one-off issue like an ENT for ear infection that is expected to resolve and require no ongoing treatment. But for persistent conditions where you go back to the same specialist again and again every year, a new referral should not be required unless you ceased treatment for an extended period.

I think they know full well as we do that the lockdown will go into next week, it's the usual line of "the health team will review the situation on a daily basis & let all know as soon as we do" line. yeah yeah.

extension of lockdown a certainty IMO. I can't imagine them opening up with daily cases still happening, linked or not. and other states won't lower their borders if daily cases still turn up.

Its been reported that QR check in have been falling in all states (the drop off one week after the latest WA lock down was even larger), which is why we need to see them mandated at more places (especially supermarkets) and more policing of their use in high risk locations like bars.

Of course not, however that is human nature to not do so.

But I think you've also hit the nail on the head.

We have seen enough times now. Eradication is completely and utterly impossible - so what is the new plan?

I think he meant that 'There are no mystery cases. Every case has been linked to the Wuhan outbreak.' :)

Isn't the plan to vaccinate enough people, get through the federal election and then, and only then, start the conversations that with vaccinations COVID will be more like the flu - some may get ill - but for most it will be only a minor illness.

I agree, what's the plan? Are we just going to be perpetually locked out of the world and let businesses sink?

We really get to continue strong with the vaccination program and make it easier to get vaccinated. We are not a huge country, yet the system is just incredibly bad.

Remember when we all though we'd be travelling again by July 2020? I also wonder if the states expected to be running hotel quarantine for what is likely to be 2+ years. I would support any state that no longer wishes to accept the responsibility, which as you say constitutionally sits with federal government. No doubt any such revolt would happen on party political grounds...but for example if some states were to get together and report back to national cabinet that they are no longer prepared to run HQ after e.g. 31 Dec 2021...I'd fully support that.
I didn’t think we would be travelling that quickly. A friend’s daughter works for BorderForce. She told me in late April 2020 that they were preparing for the borders to be closed until 2022. I have to admit that I didn’t think that was possible, but it did wake me up to what the authorities thought might be the case…..

Conversations are happening behind closed doors, but I would agree that no one will risk letting the virus in any further pre the next election.

Just on the furore on the term Mystery Cases:

Originally when it came in to being is was:

What is a mystery case?

If contact tracers can't find the source of someone's infection after a full investigation, they record the case as having an unknown source.
These cases are sometimes termed as mystery cases, community transmission or locally acquired - source not identified.

You might also remember that there were differences between the jurisdiction on how long that period of investigation would be. Remember the 28 Day Clock for when if a case was not linked that it became a reason to close a border?

Today some in the media and/or public often now seem to just it for any case that is not immediately linked when publicly announced. Clearly in such a situation there would not have been time to have been a full investigation.

So Mystery Cases is now an imprecise term that is used with different meanings, by different people.
