Paul Kelly just called the towers vertical cruise ships :) He said we just haven’t seen this level of community spread in Australia before,

I don't know, but your first post on this particular subject was written just like Pushka interpreted it. I don't think there is a need to make a big thing about it.

Whether the person was positive or not actually is irrelevant to the need for staff to have asked the question. Everyone is asked, along with other standard screening questions.

Pushkas comment was: I'm surprised a question about Covid contact wasn't asked on admission.

Well if it wasn't I would be surprised too, and hence why I asked why she thought that it had not been asked. All patients are asked.

To undergo any procedure, the patient would been asked questions (indeed you will have to complete a detailed survey and sign the form stating that it is accurate) relating to Covid19, cold flu, international travel etc, along with other questions relating and risk factors relating to other diseases and their medical history. Indeed all patients will complete the same form whether they have had a Covid 19 test or not and so I do not understand why the assumption would be that hospital staff at a major hospital would not ask. So in either scenario of whether a person was Covid 19 positive, or simply awaiting a test result, their status is actually irrelevant to the hospital asking all the questions. It will most definitely affect when they will get treated though.

Isn’t that what I said?
Isolation and quarantine can mean slightly different things.

I view isolation as being at home and more a voluntarily choice to abide by a request/recommendation and quarantine as more mandatory and a requirement and usually away from home.

I’ve been guilty of using the terms interchangeably, but there is a slight difference if one wanted to be precise.

The hard lockdown of the public housing towers is a mix of those - a requirement but at home. It really feels like one step away from the hotel quarantine for overseas arrivals.

The other aspect is who pays for it/living expenses. More people are coming to the view that at certain stages it should be borne by the individual, particularly if they had a hand in extending it unnecessarily.

PS not even saying that you used the terms incorrectly, just adding to the thread/flow of conversation.

Edit: I don’t think there is much difference between a choice between testing or longer quarantine/isolation or no choice either do a test or be isolated/quarantined. Semantics perhaps?!

I’d suggest he hasn’t had a relative in a nursing home during influenza or Noro alert where the % of infected per pop would be greater.

A significant issue the Vic gov will be well aware of that it is pretty pointless to beat the chest over fines and user imposed quarantine costs for people living in the nine towers. The vast majority are there for a reason - insufficient funds to live anywhere else (other than the streets).

So while actively looking to both be looking like being tough & simultaneously avoiding allegations of discrimination; they need to carefully treat the vulnerable population in a different way to the announcements of what will happen in more affluent suburbs.

Agree with what you say.

But now they have put the stake in the ground.

Gladys (NSW) is probably now regretting the stake in the ground re paying for quarantine of overseas arrivals. It was probably the right thing to do but where is the point when it’s not.

Agree - but I think the gov have alluded already to a "different" way. Mentioning rent relief, support services on site, assistance with food deliveries, medication, counselling etc. Other people in 14 days quarantine at home had to fend for and fund themselves and were fined if "disobeying". I have no problem whatsoever with a different approach, in fact heartened by it, but I'm sure there will be those who seek to create division & controversy (particularly some less than scrupulous persons in the media) if they get the chance.

Edit: Announced today 2 weeks free rent, hardship payments, extensive on site support services, Red Cross on site. Sounds like the right moves are being made and in a timely manner.

Not sure if noted up thread

Today’s Victorian number is 74
16 from controlled outbreak
1 from quarantine
4 from routine testing
53 under investigation
According to ABC website Covid live blog, Vic CHO has stated a revised figure of 67, as a result of reclassification.

Not details as to breakdown....nothing updated on the VIC DHHS website yet.

Acting Federal CMO has mentioned amongst other things that we have conducted 2.7 million tests.

Does anyone know how many kits we have?

I remember 10million being obtained/ordered, but not much else on the matter.

For the sake of reason, we haven’t really been testing for it either. There will be plenty of firsts for a while!

The only way to shed some positivity on this is that, after nearly 6 months, this will be a genuine test of our systems. We “flattened the curve“ and ruined a lot of lives while “getting the system ready to cope”. A localized outbreak is exactly what our best case scenario was, so now it’s happened this is the time to test it.

If, in 2 weeks time, the hospitals aren’t struggling, ICU isn’t overflowing and people with no prior medical issues aren’t dropping dead in the corridors, then the exercise is a success. At least we have something to work with now.

Don't you dare talk about the future and living with the virus, its too much common sense for a Sunday ;)

That prompts an interesting question. What was expected (say in volume), when and and by whom.

I would suspect (with no actual knowledge) that politicians in the national cabinet hadn't got around to that that even if the medicos had maybe pondered the subject.

From what I have heard, NSW had worked out they could deal with 30-40 a day on an ongoing basis.

I have to admit I use them interchangeably, so I think it is semantics. People either do the test or are kept away from others until the risk is past. :)

Sorry I shouldn’t have condensed his comment. He said we haven’t seen this level of community spread of COVID-19 before. Typing is a challenge for me so I do condense....

Twiggy obtained 10 million from the Chinese - managed to snatch them from the Yanks in spite of them offering more, because of his connections.

You are not alone

In fairness, Trump has been saying that from day one, which wasn’t the time to do it.

We’ve had the benefit of seeing it run out of control overseas, and so did the US. Australia, however, took the opportunity to get things ready so we could be prepared and manage it.

Somewhere along the way we seemed to get lost, so while we impacted a lot of lives, probably killed a lot of people by keeping them out of hospitals (ie Newmarch House) and we’re now not willing to move onto the next stage of the plan.
