ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Payment plans are easy for personal tax debts. Companies it's harder and not easy to get the interest waved I've found

Just heard on ABC news that Chalmers will give the ATO funding to delay the non acceptance of credit card payments for 1 year...

As I said earlier, Wong is full of sh.t!

They had no choice really, it was simply farcical! They looked like idiots. Well they still do.
I do not believe the ATO looked like idiots. Perhaps the elected representatives in Parliament.

Previously no ATO payments could be made by credit card where the ATO wore the cost of that payment. With the removal of surcharges the ATO had seemingly budgeted for a two month transition.

Now it looks likely the Taxpayer via the Government is going to ante up $200M to cover the cost of such payments for 'up to' a year.

A mate pointed out the next election is in 18 months' time....so wonder if the government will extend it again leading up to the election ;)

Well that’s a relief that we don’t have to prepay tax in the 2 month window. Now just a ‘up to 12 month’ window which probably means to 30 June as a convenient date or the quarter end past the next election!

Yes the elected representatives is who I'm referring to. The ones saying how wonderful they are for this change.

I think 12 months is better than 2 but there will be a sunset clause in this of 12 months from the looks of it. Needs to be indefinite. Seems much like the new super tax. They proposed something heinous like taxing unrealized gains and then ‘backtracked’ on that and the rest of their proposal sailed through as it wasn’t as bad …

Might this be the same playbook?

It is not 12 months...credit card payments to ATO extended to 30 June 2027....as per Chalmers live on TV now

So Wong saying earlier ATO is independent of government is absolutely rubbish!

Great news, another backflip from a poorly thought out policy, yet again !

Can only hope!

Now official - extended another 7 months ...
Yes, it had become politically untenable; such credibility as there was was being eroded by the day if not the hour, something had to give. And after all the fine words back and forth in the past week it looks like it’s the taxpayers who’ll be doing so.

So with the repreive, what cards are people actually planning to use to pay the ATO, iirc only NAB business cards and AMEX (at reduced rate) cards actually accrue points.

Or has this all been about non serious points earners wanting the extra days of credit

I have all 3, and probably be using my AMEX Plat Bus since the others have a credit limit

My understanding is the only people who really benefit are those with an ABN and a Business credit card

Almost all personal cards earn nothing with the ATO, except for Amex
